Designer, artist, researcher and founder of Yankatu,
Maria Fernanda Paes de Barros, is participating in
Amazonie immersive , Art-Saveur-Tradition-Durabilité, promoted by Déco Brésil, Espirito Mundo and Talk Gallery, in Brussels. The event brings together works produced by Brazilian artists that rescue
the ancestry of indigenous peoples and aims to propose an
immersion in the culture of the Amazon . The first piece to arrive at the exhibition is the
Christmas tree created by Maria Fernanda in 2020 , at the invitation of curator Waldick Jatobá and the Tivoli Mofarrej hotel. Created with
more than a thousand buriti threads , made by the women of the Kaupüna village, of the Mehinaku ethnic group, in Xingu, and cotton threads dyed with saffron by Mattricaria, the work, according to Maria Fernanda, reinforces the
importance of ancestry and the union between different cultures , symbolizing that “there are many of us, but we need to be united to structure ourselves and allow life to continue”.
The Tree opened the event on December 15th, which features, in addition to the works of art, immersions, lectures and interventions by some artists, as well as food products manufactured by indigenous communities. These actions will take place between
January 22nd and 25th , and Maria Fernanda will be taking part with more works created by her – among them the
Oca chair and the
Kaupüna swing , as well as a talk about her work and a
workshop . “
Each culture has different celebrations and symbols , but they all know how important each one is for the well-being of the whole. In this work, I sought to move away from the religious context, look at the whole and bring lightness and simplicity, with the intention of
bringing visitors a feeling of unity and action ,” comments Maria Fernanda.
