The couple had already lived for some time in an apartment near
Copacabana Fort with an incredible view of the sea and
Sugarloaf Mountain . Compact, the 65 m² property with two suites had already undergone renovation in 2021, until the possibility of purchasing the
neighboring apartment arose three years later. And the two, of course, didn't even think twice.
"As we had recently renovated the apartment, the clients asked us not to change anything that had already been done. In other words, we had to include the second apartment, creating a single and integrated space, without realizing that the two renovations were carried out at different times", says architect
Vivian Reimers , from the office VRO Arquitetura – cast
CASACOR Rio –, responsible for both works.
In the first renovation, in 2021, the original plan – with two suites,
a bathroom and a very small
kitchen – had been completely modified. At the time, the architect integrated the kitchen with the living room, creating a peninsula bench that included both a dining space and a dining table.
Another significant change is that one of the bedrooms was opened to the social area, as the couple have adult children who do not live in the property. As a result, the space was converted into a multifunctional environment that served as a guest bedroom, home office and TV room.
When purchasing the second apartment, the residents' desire was to have a larger social area and also a very comfortable master suite. As a result, the second kitchen was deactivated and transformed into a charming bar corner.
"We took advantage of the existing installations to create a countertop with a discreet bowl, which has a lid made with the same stone. A feature that guarantees a continuous and elegant look", highlights Vivian.
The social area has gained much more scope, an even more privileged view of the Copacabana sea – seen from every corner of the property – and the chance to house beautiful pieces, such as the
eight-seater dining table of European origin and the Versailles style French chandelier bought in an antiques dealer.
One of the biggest challenges of this second renovation, in fact, was precisely integrating the two rooms without changing what had been done three years earlier. "Amending the living room floor and reconciling the heights of the plaster ceiling without creating unevenness was a true work of magic, especially since the ceilings are relatively low", recalls the architect.
Another creative solution was to reuse part of the carpentry planned for the first property, without making adjustments to its measurements. The china cabinet, which had been created for the previous room, was used to hide one of the entrance doors. The old television panel with rack went to the couple's new suite.
To create the couple's dream space, the architect united the two suites of the second property, keeping the two bathrooms and transforming one of the bedrooms into a comfortable closet, with planned joinery that includes a central island for organizing small items.
The bathroom also received special attention: a mirror, from the family's collection, was the starting point for the decoration, which also included wallpaper of Italian origin imitating linen texture and a photo by
Ari Kaye that shows the beauty of the sunset. Copacabana sun.
