The couple of lawyers already lived in this spacious apartment facing Flamengo Beach (with a view of Sugarloaf Mountain), when they decided to commission architects Gabriella Mello Alves, Carolina Lerner and Sabina Kalaoun, from
Studio Lak , to renovate just the social area, measuring
140 m², comprising a balcony, guest bathroom, living room , dining room and private room. “In terms of decor, the clients asked to mix his more modern and classic pieces with her bolder pieces. They also wanted a spacious room with a big screen that didn’t look like a TV room,” says Carolina.
Without altering the original plan, the architects designed, right at the entrance, a box-like
carpentry that
mimics the doors leading to the kitchen, toilet and family room , while also visually delimiting a small living area with
a bar .
In the main room, the L-shaped sofa “island” delimits, on one side, the social area and, on the other, an area with a screen built into the slatted woodwork that extends across the entire wall, with a suspended bench beneath it, of the same width.
With an eclectic style, the
decor is a mix of classic elements, icons of modern Brazilian design and contemporary pieces , “embraced” by the dark wooden floorboards, carpentry with a natural freijó finish and predominantly white walls.
From the couple's collection, all the artwork, the dining table, the chairs, the chandelier, the
Mole armchair and the four
Kilin armchairs (by
Sergio Rodrigues ), as well as the pair of
Slick armchairs (by
Sergio Fahrer ), were kept in the project. The rest of the furniture is new. “When clients have iconic design pieces, they inevitably end up guiding the selection of new furniture. Among the pieces acquired, also signed, we highlight the
Diz armchairs, by Sergio Rodrigues, and
Charles Eames ”, explains Gabriella.
According to Sabina, the
Burle Marx painting (in vibrant blue and yellow tones) displayed on the main wall of the living room, behind the sofa, was the starting point for defining the color palette of the project. “Since the furniture already had neutral tones, we used more vibrant colors in the rugs, cushions and some small loose furniture. The colors also appear in the other works of art that the couple already had,” she says.
“Without a doubt, our biggest challenge in this project was to blend the classic with the contemporary in a fun and light way. The final result was very harmonious,” concludes architect Carolina Lerner, from Studio Lak Arquitetura.
