In decoration, few approaches are as engaging as those that evoke affective memories. Retro design does exactly that: it resurrects styles, colors, shapes, and striking objects from the past to recreate contemporary projects with a nostalgic aura. More than just adopting a visual style, it is about reinterpreting previous eras in light of current functionality and lifestyle — a creative exercise that combines memory, aesthetics, and innovation!

This trend dialogues especially with the 1950s to 1980s, but it is not limited to them. Retro design can appear in an armchair with tapered legs, a geometric wallpaper, a colorful refrigerator, or an old radio integrated into the décor. Each detail recalls the past but fits naturally into current compositions. It is a versatile resource, allowing bold choices without sacrificing comfort and personal identity.

What is retro design?

The retro aesthetic is a time travel reinterpreted with contemporary eyes. More than a literal reproduction, it is about a reinterpretation that combines references from previous decades with modern solutions. Retro design originated from the search for identity and the appreciation of striking styles of the 20th century, such as the curvilinear furniture of the 1950s, the geometric patterns of the 1960s, or the explosion of colors and textures of the 1970s.

However, it is not about creating a replica of an era. The secret lies in the balanced mixture of past and present. In summary, the main characteristics of retro design include: the use of vibrant colors, rounded shapes, striking graphic patterns, and textures like velvet and formica. The result is projects full of history, but with current comfort and practicality.

Retro design x Vintage: what is the difference?

Although often used as synonyms, retro design and vintage style have different meanings — and understanding this distinction helps when creating a cohesive and intentional project. While vintage refers to original period pieces, usually over 20 or 30 years old, retro design involves the contemporary production of objects inspired by the past.

In other words, a sofa made today with a typical 1960s look is retro; whereas a piece of furniture actually made in that decade is vintage.

Both styles can coexist in the same project, but require curation. Retro allows for more creative freedom, with practical and updated solutions. On the other hand, vintage brings historical authenticity and tends to have more of a collector's appeal. The combination of the two can result in projects rich in layers, personality, and charm.

Tips for incorporating retro design

Incorporating retro design into décor can be simpler than it seems. Below, we gathered suggestions that help bring the nostalgic charm into the home without sacrificing functionality.

Period Design Furniture

Pieces signed or inspired by great names of iconic design, such as Charles Eames or Sérgio Rodrigues, have shapes and materials that transcend generations. A sofa with tapered legs, an armchair with a curved back, or a dining table in natural wood with a matte finish is enough to imprint the retro spirit into the space. The ideal is to mix with more neutral furniture to balance the ensemble.

Colors That Recall Past Decades

The palette of retro design usually includes shades like mustard, olive green, petroleum blue, burnt red, and antique pink. These colors can appear on walls, upholstery, or decorative objects. Earthy and saturated tones create a warm and nostalgic atmosphere, especially when combined with dark woods or brushed metals.

Wallpapers and Iconic Prints

Geometry, tiny florals, or psychedelic shapes are graphic elements that define retro aesthetics well. They work both in wallpapers and in fabrics, cushions, or rugs. The secret is moderation: a patterned wall or a curtain with a retro pattern is enough to bring identity without weighing down the composition.

Original Pieces Mixed with Contemporary Items

Thrift stores, antique shops, and design fairs are great places to find lamps, mirrors, old radios, and decorative plates with personality. Bringing these objects into everyday life is a way to keep the memory of other times alive, as well as generating an interesting contrast with more current elements, such as a wall of burnt cement or a LED lamp.

Attention to Details

Not only furniture or colors define a retro project. Small details, such as porcelain handles, golden metal faucets, and Bakelite switches, also help reinforce the aesthetic. These finishes create points of interest that enrich the visual experience of the space.

Retro design beyond the living room

The retro charm can be present in every room of the house — and each space offers unique opportunities for aesthetic experimentation.
  • Kitchen: retro design gains strength with rounded appliances and striking colors, such as pastel-colored refrigerators or vintage-designed mixers.
  • Bathroom: finishes with colorful grout and oval mirrors create a nostalgic and elegant ambiance.
  • Bedrooms: upholstered headboards, lamps with an antique air, and light wood furniture transport you to past decades without compromising comfort.
  • Home office: it is possible to add retro elements with ergonomic chairs inspired by modernist design and decorative objects with history.
