An
integrated floor plan has earned its place in contemporary architecture by promoting
spaciousness, brightness, and fluidity among the projects. However, for those living in homes with this configuration, it is not always easy to find refuge amidst the dynamism of open spaces. In these cases, the solution may lie in a concept that is as discreet as it is functional:
hidden rooms.

Hidden rooms are not limited to secret passages or camouflaged doors. It is a proposal that values the
balance between the collective and the private, with resources that ensure isolation without interrupting the fluid aesthetics of the house. Retractable doors, sliding panels, multifunctional shelves, and theatrical curtains are just some possible strategies — all with a strong visual and emotional appeal!
Ideas to create hidden rooms with charm and functionality
Thinking of a hidden room is, above all, an
exercise in spatial sensitivity. Below, we have gathered suggestions that can be adapted to different styles and square footage.
Sliding panels
Inspired by
Japanese architecture and minimalist solutions, sliding panels are excellent allies for creating hidden rooms with lightness. In
wood, frosted glass, cane, or even perforated metal, they divide without closing off. When open, they completely integrate the space; when closed, they offer the desired privacy. Ideal for
studios, lofts, or integrated suites.

Shelves as dividers
Open furniture, such as
shelves or contemporary screens, can take on the role of a divider with versatility and beauty. By partially hiding the bed or the intimate space, they create the feeling of a hidden room without blocking the light. They also serve as
supports for cherished objects, books, and plants — adding personality to the project.

Curtains and fabrics
The use of
curtains to isolate projects has gained new momentum with the return of textures in décor. In
linen, velvet, or raw cotton, they become protagonists by softly and fluidly delineating the room. When gathered, they disappear into the scenery; when extended, they transform the space into a true cocoon. A
practical and cozy choice for those who want a temporary hidden room.

Camouflaged doors
For bolder projects, camouflaged doors are a
sophisticated and surprising solution. Embedded in
woodwork panels, they go unnoticed in the composition of the projects, revealing the room only when necessary. It is a poetic way to preserve intimacy without compromising the overall aesthetics of the house — ideal for
guest rooms, home offices, or discreet suites.

Mezzanines and different levels
In houses with
high ceilings, mezzanines can function as hidden rooms — especially for those seeking versatility in the use of space. The height difference creates a
natural visual separation, which can be reinforced with glass guardrails, slatted panels, or curtains. Another possibility is to
use floor level changes to subtly mark the transition between projects.

Advantages of adopting hidden rooms
The search for
privacy without visual disruption has intensified in recent years, especially with the growth of remote work and prolonged coexistence at home. In this context, hidden rooms offer the opportunity to create a
personal refuge, even in compact or integrated floors, without resorting to structural renovations.
(Felipe Petrovsky/CASACOR)
In addition to
functionality, they allow the project to dialogue with the
identity of the residents. Whether with a playful touch (like doors that look like shelves), or with a discrete contemporary language, hidden rooms become
scenes for imagination and comfort.
