The material, traditionally associated with internal projects, has also gained space in wetted and outdoor areas, including edges and interiors of pools. Its appeal lies in the versatility of finishes, mechanical and chemical resistance, and ease of maintenance.
Available in various textures, colors, and shapes, porcelain tile can replicate everything from natural stones to wood, allowing the pool to harmoniously integrate with the rest of the landscaping or architectural project.

However, the application of porcelain tile in pools requires extra care. Not all types are suitable for continuous immersion, and the installation must follow specific technical standards to ensure durability and safety. Additionally, factors such as slipping, water absorption, and resistance to chlorine or salt must be considered at the time of selection.

This type is indicated for wetted areas because it has a homogeneous structure, without a glaze layer. It is extremely resistant to abrasion, moisture, and the chemical products commonly used in pools. Its durability makes it ideal for the interior of pools and for edges.
When well specified, glazed porcelain can also be used. It is essential that it has a non-slip finish, such as natural or satin, which are safer for wetted areas. Polished finishes should be avoided, as they are slippery and not recommended for this type of application.
The absorption rate of porcelain tile must be below 0.5%, ensuring that the material does not suffer damage from continuous moisture. This characteristic is essential to avoid infiltrations and premature wear.
Some brands develop specific collections for pools and external areas, with chemical resistance, UV protection, and differentiated aesthetics. They mimic natural stones, burnt cement, wood, or even tiles, offering great creative freedom to architects.

The correct application of porcelain tile in pools is fundamental to avoid problems such as infiltrations, detachment of pieces, and the appearance of stains. The process must follow well-defined stages, beginning with a robust and effective waterproofing project. It is important to apply a waterproof membrane or sealing mortar throughout the pool structure, ensuring that water does not penetrate the internal layers.
After waterproofing, the appropriate adhesive mortar for submerged porcelain tiles should be chosen — usually, those of the AC-III type, which withstand high humidity and temperature variations, are recommended. The application must be careful, using notched trowels to ensure ideal adhesion and avoid hollow spaces between the covering and the base.
The grout is also a crucial element. For pools, common cement grouts are not the most indicated, as they can suffer from fungi and cracks. Prefer epoxy grouts, which are more resistant to water, chlorine, and fungi, in addition to facilitating cleaning and maintaining the visual aspect.
Another important point is dilation: it is essential to foresee expansion joints, especially in larger pools, to avoid the warping of pieces from the natural movement of the structure. Finally, hiring specialized labor is indispensable. Professionals with experience in this type of project ensure that all stages are correctly executed, minimizing future risks.

Cost: The price of porcelain tile, combined with specific inputs and the need for qualified labor, can raise the final project cost compared to other solutions, such as glass tiles or common ceramic.
Safety and thermal comfort issues: Some porcelain tile finishes may heat up significantly in the sun or become slippery when wet, which requires extra attention when choosing the appropriate type and planning the pool area.

Regular cleaning with neutral products: To preserve the original appearance of the covering, it is recommended to use soft brushes and neutral detergents. Abrasive products should be avoided, as they can compromise the material's finish.
Maintenance of grouts: Even epoxy grout, which is resistant and durable, requires periodic inspections. Cracks or wear should be quickly corrected to prevent infiltrations or the detachment of pieces.
Water quality control: Maintaining balanced water pH and controlling chlorine levels and other chemical products is essential not only for the users' well-being but also to preserve the porcelain tile.
Prevention of stains and organic buildup: Leaves, dirt, and debris should be removed frequently, especially from edges and joints, which are areas more prone to residue accumulation. Efficient filters and skimmers are important allies in this maintenance.
