Every year, 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted or lost along the food supply chain, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This number represents 30% of all food produced by year on the planet.
Due to the problem, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 12 foresees reducing global per capita waste by half by 2030, as well as reducing losses in production and supply systems, including post-harvest.
One such solution, right in the palm of your hand, is a new app created by Saasha Celestial-One and Tessa Clark.
Olio is a platform that uses geolocation to identify nearby users and allows you to “advertise” your leftovers from dinner for free. at home or in a commercial establishment. The idea is that the app will not only solve the problem of waste, but also of hunger and those who have nothing to eat.

The app already has 635,000 users and has already shared 1,138,886 portions of food in 32 countries. To participate is simple. Just download the app from the
Play Store or
App Store , take a photo of the food available for donation and a brief description, and Those in the vicinity will receive a notification of what is being offered.

The goal is for the platform to be available worldwide by 2025. In Brazil, the app works perfectly, but with few users. The idea is for it to become a chain, and for people to feel motivated to reduce waste and help who feels hungry.
