The choice of the right lighting in the house's projects goes far beyond aesthetics. The color temperature of a lamp directly influences the atmosphere, visual comfort, and even the performance of activities. Among the most common options, white light and yellow light serve distinct roles in decoration and in the functionality of the spaces.

While white light is associated with concentration and clarity, yellow light refers to relaxation and comfort. Knowing when to use each one (or combining them strategically!) helps to enhance the architecture, highlight materials, and create atmospheres aligned with the uses of each project in the house.

How color temperature works in lighting

Before deciding between white or yellow light, it is important to understand what differentiates one from the other. The color temperature (measured in Kelvin - K) indicates the tone emitted by the lamp. The lower the temperature, the warmer and yellower the light will be. The higher it is, the cooler and whiter. Therefore, this grading directly affects the visual perception and the use of projects.
  • Yellow light: between 2700K and 3000K
  • Neutral white light: around 4000K
  • Cool white light: between 5000K and 6500K

Where to use white light:

White light is often recommended for projects that require focus, attention, and clear visibility. Its cooler tone conveys a sense of cleanliness, making it very useful in work and service areas.

Kitchens and service areas

The sharpness of white light favors food preparation and makes it easy to see dirt or residue. In service areas, it also ensures visibility in everyday tasks like washing clothes or organizing items.

(Alvaro Mier/CASACOR)

Offices and study spaces

Projects focused on productivity benefit from white light as it stimulates concentration and reduces eye strain. It is a common choice for home offices, study desks, and residential libraries.

Bathrooms

Depending on the style of the project, white light can be useful in bathrooms — especially in the mirror area — as it ensures color fidelity, facilitating tasks like makeup or shaving.

Where to use yellow light:

With a warmer and more welcoming tone, yellow light contributes to creating a warm and relaxing atmosphere. It is usually recommended for rest or socializing areas.

Living rooms

The sense of coziness conveyed by yellow light reinforces the informal and inviting use of the living room. It enhances natural materials, such as wood and fibers, and can be used in decorative lamps, table lamps, and pendants.

Dado Castello Branco Arquitetura - Living do Colecionador. (Juliano Colodeti, do MCA Estúdio/CASACOR)

Bedrooms

The use of yellow light in bedrooms facilitates the transition of the body to rest, helping to signal the end of the day. Therefore, it is common for the project to combine main lighting with softer and indirect sources.

Dinners and socializing areas

In dining rooms or integrated balconies, yellow light creates a more engaging atmosphere. When used with a dimmer, it allows intensity adjustments to suit the occasion.

Possible combinations and mixed lighting

In many cases, the most efficient lighting project alternates or combines the two color temperatures. This allows for adapting the use of lighting to the time of day, the function of the space, and even the mood of the residents.

Layers of light

The use of different sources (such as direct, indirect, and spotlight) is a way to integrate white and yellow light in the same project. For example, in a kitchen integrated with the living room, white light can be over the counters, while pendants with yellow light create a warmer atmosphere over the table.

Lamps with temperature adjustment

Smart bulbs or temperature-controlled lamps allow switching between cold and warm light with the use of apps or switches with specific functions. This expands the flexibility of lighting, adapting to different uses throughout the day.

Strategic fixtures, table lamps, and sconces

Another effective way to apply mixed lighting is to combine direct white light for specific activities, such as reading or food preparation, with indirect yellow light, coming from table lamps, sconces, or built-in LED strips. This layering creates a balance between functionality and coziness, allowing the project to adapt to different uses throughout the day.

Ateliê do Tempo - Isis Dallarmi. Um manifesto de resistência à padronização, o Ateliê do Tempo, com 28 m², é o refúgio de uma caçadora de tendências que transita entre passado, presente e futuro. Inspirado pela música Delilah, de Florence and the Machine, e por Daisy Jones do livro e série homônimos: Daisy Jones and the Six, o home office mescla estilos boho, vintage e maximalista, convidando à autenticidade. "Cada cantinho deste ateliê resgata uma história única, instigando-nos a viver com coragem e paixão", declara a arquiteta. Nele, o tempo cede lugar à liberdade criativa e à celebração pessoal.
