The gypsum ceiling plays an increasingly significant role in Brazilian homes and is present in many projects of CASACOR, serving as a sophisticated and practical solution. Versatile in its application, this element is widely chosen by architects and designers due to its elegant appearance, functionality, and aesthetic transformation potential of the spaces.

Common gypsum ceiling vs. Drywall gypsum ceiling

The common gypsum ceiling is made with solid gypsum boards, while drywall is composed of gypsum sheets coated with cardboard. Drywall is lighter, produces less mess during installation, and tends to be more resistant to cracks and fissures compared to common gypsum.

Advantages

  • Creative Flexibility: Allows various shapes and details of indirect or recessed lighting, enhancing any project.
  • Excellent finish: Its smooth surface facilitates various types of paint and decorative finishes, combining with different architectural styles.
  • Thermal and acoustic comfort: Acts as a good insulator, creating more comfortable and quieter spaces.
  • Quick installation: The installation time is relatively short, ideal for projects that require speed.

Disadvantages

  • Moisture sensitivity: This material can suffer damage in humid projects or where there are constant risks of leaks.
  • Structural fragility: Its structure requires care when installing heavy items, such as chandeliers and fans, requiring prior planning.
  • Maintenance difficulty: The replacement or repair process can be labor-intensive and relatively costly depending on the damage.
  • Lower impact resistance: When subjected to blows or sudden movements, gypsum can easily show cracks or structural damage.

What finishes can the gypsum ceiling have?

The gypsum ceiling can have different finishes, such as:
  • Rebate: A small recess between the ceiling and the wall, creating a floating effect and allowing indirect lighting.
  • Frames: Decorative details applied to the edges of the ceiling.
  • Cornices: Recesses to embed indirect lighting.
  • Recesses: Create interesting volumes and visual effects.
  • Strips: Small linear cuts for a modern design.
  • Integrated lighting: With integrated spots or LED strips.

Inspired by a “Lounge Store,” the 40m2 area was designed to showcase the store's products and provide more comfort. The professional rebuilt the space's structure with drywall walls and panels. The gypsum ceiling with linear cornices receives LED lighting, which provides diffuse indirect light, while directional spots on industrial tracks have been strategically placed to highlight the brand's products, displayed on thin metal shelves, installed in solid wood slabs. Where to avoid the material

  • Bathrooms and kitchens: Areas with higher incidence of steam and moisture that compromise the durability of gypsum.
  • Outdoor or semi-open areas: Exposed to climate variations, may accelerate damage to the material.

Tips to prolong the lifespan of your gypsum ceiling

  • Schedule periodic inspections to identify possible cracks or moisture.
  • Invest in waterproof paints that increase resistance against possible infiltrations.
  • Always use specialized labor, ensuring proper and secure installation.
