Anahí Aguilera and Thalía Aguilera - Refuge of the Immaculate. The garden honors the Virgin Mary, in her title of Fatima. Indirect light travels around the entire perimeter, symbolizing the mediation of the Virgin between heaven, represented by glass, and earth, reflected in the ceramic walls. Three sitting areas are distributed around the image, including a contemplation space framed by wooden arches. Light materials, such as travertine and dark wood, reinforce the serenity of the projects.

With its broad leaves, organic shapes, and variety of shades of green, the tropical garden carries an aesthetic force capable of completely transforming projects. Inspired by the vegetation of humid forests, this landscaping style is synonymous with abundance, freshness, and vitality. More than a fleeting trend, it has established itself as a refuge inside the house — a way to bring nature into daily life, even in reduced spaces.

Setting up a tropical garden is an invitation to informality and contact with greenery. It requires planning and attention to the microclimate, but in return, it offers a warm beauty and a lively space that transforms over time. And the best part: you don't need large external areas to invest in this style — balconies, backyards, and even internal walls can turn into tropical landscapes.

Elements that define the tropical garden

To create a true tropical garden at home, some elements are essential — from the type of plant to decorative finishes and the control of the microclimate.

Rodrigo Ferreira e Isabela Toneli - CASA SMART. A modularidade permite expansão e personalização, enquanto a arte valoriza memórias e expressões pessoais. Com soluções sustentáveis e automação sutil, o projeto une conforto, estética e propósito. Um lar vivo, que cresce com seus moradores e reflete um estilo de vida leve, dinâmico e consciente. (Edgard Cesar/CASACOR)

Plants with large leaves and organic shapes

The typical species of a tropical garden catch attention for their broad and lush leaves. Costela-de-adão, pacová, alocasia, maranta, heliconia, and ornamental banana are just a few examples. Ideally, it's best to combine different heights and volumes to create a composition full of movement.

Vibrant colors and natural textures

Even with a predominance of green, the tropical garden accommodates well touches of color from flowers like bromeliads, hibiscus, alpinias, and emperor's rods. Vases and furniture made from natural fibers, stones, or wood complement the atmosphere, reinforcing the idea of an organic project.

Moisture and shading just right

Since the inspiration comes from humid forests, the tropical garden requires a project with good humidity in the air and moderate solar incidence — light filtered through trees or structures, for example. Well-ventilated internal projects and external areas with partial shade are ideal.

Where and how to create a tropical garden at home

The tropical garden can adapt to different spaces in the house, from generous outdoor areas to cozier corners. The secret lies in the choice of the right species and how they integrate with the project.

On the balcony

Even small spaces come to life with a vertical tropical garden. Bet on shelves with pots of ferns, hanging jiboias, and peperomias. The use of suspended planters helps to create layers and texture.

In backyards or external corridors

Narrow areas can also receive tropical landscaping. For this, combine plants of different heights close to walls. The use of draining floors and paths with natural stones contributes to a warm and functional aesthetic.

In the bathroom

Humid projects like bathrooms are ideal for tropical shade species. Placing pots of marantas or anthuriums on countertops or shelves creates a small private oasis. In this case, just make sure there is sufficient ventilation.

As part of the internal decoration

Next to shelves, sofas, or even at the entrance of the house, tropical plants can integrate with furniture as objects of living decoration. An imposing pot of costela-de-adão or a composition with calatheas in handmade cachepots can completely change the perception of a project.

Basic care for the tropical garden

Despite its lush appearance, the tropical garden does not require intense maintenance. The essential thing is to keep frequent watering, without soaking the soil, and ensure that the leaves receive filtered light. Periodic cleaning on the leaves and light fertilization help maintain the vigor of the plants. In internal projects, a humidifier or a sprayer with water helps simulate the humid microclimate that these species need.
