Straight from the New York lofts to contemporary projects, the industrial style has made its mark in Brazilian decor. With an urban, laid-back look full of personality, it combines exposed materials, simple forms, and neutral palettes to create welcoming and simultaneously sophisticated projects.

The style especially appeals to those who seek an aesthetic authenticity, valuing the history of materials and prioritizing functionality. By uniting the raw with the comfortable, the industrial can transition between spacious and small areas with the same informal elegance. Below, we explore the essence of industrial style, its characteristic materials and colors, and how to creatively apply it in different projects.

What is industrial style

Inspired by warehouses and factories from the early 20th century, industrial style emerged from the adaptation of old industrial spaces into residences. Over time, the style has gained softer and more contemporary interpretations that balance urban vibes with touches of comfort, natural light and vegetation, without losing its identity.

Exposed pipes, metal structures, concrete, and unfinished bricks have ceased to be seen as unfinished and have become part of the aesthetic language. This raw look is what defines industrial style.

The focus is on the essence of materials and the sensation of spaciousness and fluidity in the projects. Open floor plans, with few elements and a strong structural presence, reinforce the functional and practical character of industrial décor.

Characteristic materials and color palette

Choosing specific materials and colors is a decisive way to adopt the industrial style. Raw elements, unfinished surfaces, and a neutral palette define this urban look that values authenticity and conscious use of resources. The main ones are:

Concrete and burnt cement

The use of exposed concrete or burnt cement is almost compulsory in projects with an industrial feel. Appearing in floors, walls, or ceilings, they reinforce the urban air and contribute to the sobriety of the space.

Exposed brick

Another trademark is exposed brick, usually with a natural or slightly worn finish. It can be present in a feature wall, creating texture and visually warming the project.

Metals and exposed structures

Pipes, beams, and metal conduits are highlighted in this style. The use of corten steel, iron, and aluminum appears in lighting, furniture, countertops, and dividers -- always with matte or aged finishes!

Demolition wood

To balance the coldness of raw materials, the use of wood — especially demolition or rustic-finished wood — is a way to add warmth and coziness to the project while maintaining the original aesthetic.

Neutral color palette

The predominant colors in industrial style are neutral: gray, black, white, and earthy tones. The contrasts are subtle but can be punctuated by objects in more vibrant colors, such as mustard yellow, petroleum blue, or moss green, creating visual points of interest.

How to adopt industrial style in décor

Although it has strong roots in interior design, industrial style can be incorporated in a gradual and creative manner into different types of interiors. Whether in complete renovations or just small updates, it is possible to bring this urban aesthetic into your home with well-thought-out choices of furniture, finishes, and accessories.

Furniture with simple design

Industrial-style furniture is functional, with straight lines and utilitarian design. Prefer pieces in metal, raw wood, or leather that convey the idea of durability. Open shelves, high stools, tables with metal frames, and tolix chairs are choices that reinforce the aesthetic.

Lighting with an urban touch

Lighting is a fundamental part of industrial style. Opt for metal pendants, exposed tracks, and fixtures with filament bulbs, evoking the atmosphere of an industrial warehouse. It is best to combine general light with points of indirect light to create a cozy atmosphere.

Exposed structures

Instead of hiding beams, columns, and pipes, value these structures. They can be painted in neutral colors or left with their original finish. This exposure conveys authenticity and reinforces the concept of the style.

Plants soften the look

Including greenery is an effective way to balance the rigidity of industrial materials. Ferns, pothos, and cacti work well in this context. Additionally, clay or cement pots follow the same raw language of the décor.

Urban language art pieces

Graphic posters, black-and-white photographs, and contemporary art resonate with industrial style. Simple frames or even the absence of them combine with the uncomplicated proposal of the urban look.
