For architect and interior designer Clarice Semerene , transforming this 120 m² apartment in Brasília for a creative couple – a photographer and a developer who is also passionate about photography – was quite natural.

“Elegant, soft and grey...like our cat Merlot”: this is how the residents summed up the atmosphere they imagined for their new home. The project is born from the balance of opposites – raw and elegant, cold and cozy, in an open space with no visual barriers.

“They wanted the apartment to be a reflection of their hometown , Brasília, a modernist city built in 1960 by architect Oscar Niemeyer ,” says Clarice in an interview with Clever.

“The couple envisioned their apartment covered in concrete and with visually connected rooms . At the same time, they wanted a soft, cozy feel to contrast with the coldness of the concrete ,” he adds.
While the initial apartment consisted of two bedrooms and a master suite, a closed kitchen and a large laundry room, the new space clearly prioritizes the social area and gives a feeling of openness and integration without borders.

The third bedroom was replaced by the dining room and the second by the TV room. The master suite has a bathroom with a transparent partition that separates the two areas and keeps them visually connected. The kitchen was reorganized and integrated into the main space.

Throughout the apartment, iron and glass partitions and doors provide acoustic insulation , but do not block the view. Natural and contrasting materials – such as cement plaster on the floor, walls and ceiling – were used to create balance and give a sense of rusticity.

Gray predominates in different tones and textures , providing a neutral base to experiment with touches of blue, green and pink through Brazilian and Italian artwork and furniture.
