The couple with a young daughter likes to travel and wanted a French touch in the
209 m² apartment, with
moldings, carvings and boiseries . But at the same time, I also wanted a contemporary vibe, with gray and wood. And the starting point of the renovation led by architect
Barbara Dundes was the color navy blue – the tone appears occasionally, but stands out on the
island sofa in the living room and on the porch swing.
As the residents are of Asian origin, they have the habit of taking off their shoes before entering the house. So, the architect created a slatted closet in the
entrance hall to store shoes, as well as placing a leather bench to help with the task. The walls covered with wood and the sconces bring comfort to the space.
The woody lining is repeated in the social area, uniting the balcony, living room, TV and bar. The blue island sofa serves both rooms and contrasts with yellow, green and gray cushions. A large rug also helps integrate the spaces, as do the
boiseries on the main wall.
In the
TV room , the lacquer shelf is full of illuminated niches that house paintings, vases, books, vegetation and souvenirs.
On the opposite side, the
bar has a gray porcelain top and a wine cellar, functioning as a support point for serving drinks in both rooms and on the balcony.
On the
balcony , the dining table is the setting for meetings with friends and the suspended armchair creates a comfortable reading corner.
In the
kitchen , there is a mix of gray lacquer with large-format porcelain tiles. On one side, there is the countertop with the floor-standing stove and, on the opposite side, a lighted china cabinet holds the porcelain.
The biggest intervention took place in the
couple's bathroom: here, a lot of work was needed to meet the client's desire for a bathroom with a French door and a double countertop. "We made his closet and her closet, and hers has access to the bathroom. Then, we placed the French doors of the closet (detail – there's even a notch in the wood) to open and face the counter. To accomplish this , we counted on the help and goodwill of our neighbor downstairs, as we broke the entire ceiling of her bathroom to move the toilet", explains Barbara.
In the suite, the herringbone flooring was made especially for the project. "We created our own covering: we cut (in a studio) strips of 10 cm each to make the rulers and assemble the design. The bricklayer was a true artist, installing one by one. Laying it took twice as long, but it was worth the effort. It's a shame", concludes the architect.
