Duplex apartment in Rio de Janeiro gets a contemporary touch after renovation
A complete renovation , the kind where practically nothing is left standing. That's what architect Andrea Chicharo had to do in this duplex apartment in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, to adapt the property to its new residents: a family made up of a mother and two adult children.

Nothing remained in its place. Walls were knocked down, window frames were replaced, bathrooms were built and even the large swimming pool that was the highlight of the balcony was removed and replaced with a much smaller one in another location in the outdoor area.

"Despite being spacious, the apartment only had one large suite on the first floor. The second floor was made up entirely of living rooms, a large service area and a small kitchen. This worked well for the couple who lived there before, but for this family, it was necessary to create more individual spaces , since there are three adults," says the architect.

The solution that Andréa found was to create the children's suites on the upper floor, which also gained a TV room just for them and a small kitchen. Meanwhile, on the first floor, the master suite for the mother was kept and a large living room that also included another TV room for her. The space, in fact, was completely integrated with the living room and dining room , creating a large living area for the family.
But the biggest change was undoubtedly made to the outdoor area: there used to be a huge pool that took up almost half of the space. Andrea completely transformed the place by removing the old pool and building a new, much smaller one on a side area of the terrace. This gave the family an extra open space to socialize , with a view of the Christ statue.

To decorate, in addition to reusing some furniture that the family already had, new pieces were purchased. All in the contemporary style that is the architect's trademark and with a national signature: they are pieces from Arquivo Contemporâneo, Way Design, Novo Ambiente , by names such as Jader Almeida and Ronald Sasson.

If integration reigns in the social area, the main tone in the master suite is welcoming. To create that cozy atmosphere that is so important at bedtime, Andrea covered practically all the walls in the room with delicate floral print wallpaper in neutral tones and used furniture with thin, contemporary lines , which give the space a light feel.
