Former industrial warehouse transformed into bright, uncluttered home
Armazém é transformado em habitação colorida e cheia de vida When you think of a warehouse, what comes to mind? It's certainly not a bright and lively home , but that was the proposal of the Burr Studio project, which wanted to innovate the space with colors and modernity to, in fact, completely change the original atmosphere and build a true space of relaxation and rest for the residents - who, by the way, were long-time friends of the architects in charge of the studio. Located in the Carabanchel neighborhood in the south of Madrid, the project aimed to create a more flexible and accessible environment. The owner discovered a small warehouse on the land that he wanted to renovate to create his home and an integrated studio, but the costs made the project unfeasible, and from there came the idea of setting it up inside the warehouse.

“We had the idea of splitting the project into two units. This would give the client the opportunity to rent out half of the unit, which would help pay for the total cost of the project,” says architect Severine Han. The architect said that she was inspired by the current situation, when people are working from home, to create a more cozy, playful and inspiring environment . In Madrid, it is quite common for homes to be small and have low ceilings. The warehouse proved to be an attractive option because it is the opposite of all this.

If left unused, many industrial buildings in Madrid could end up in line for demolition, and the studio has developed an innovative proposal to recover these spaces and transform them into housing.

The warehouse project was entirely based on an open brief . According to the architects, the biggest challenge was to make the project economically sustainable, especially to pass on the rent to the new residents. The idea was to create housing that would explore new lifestyle models.

The house was divided into two walls that have soundproofing to isolate the environment from the noise of cars outside. They created the space in a flexible way, meaning that if the residents want to change something in the place, it is possible to do so without the need for major renovations. The color palette chose vibrant yellow, white and raw wood to compose the space. Together, the colors and textures brought a casual look to the project. In addition, other colors were also incorporated into the outdoor area, such as a small green table with white and red chairs that added extra charm to the project.

To reflect the industrial style of the warehouse in the project, almost as if to not forget its roots, the architects decided to create a cosmopolitan industrial style, with exposed white bricks on the entire wall. In addition, burnt cement is also present, another strong industrial element, which was given a lighter color and therefore contributed to making the space fresh and spacious.
