Rodolfo Consoli - Studio Oniria. A shelter where the clock slows down and surfaces tell stories. Oniria is intensity, a kind of place between worlds where matter vibrates and imagination takes shape. This is how the architect defines his 63 m² studio, consisting of a living room, kitchen with bar, bathroom, and bedroom with closet and work desk. The color red (in various shades, textures, and patterns) is the trump card of the projects, in a boldness that is expressed emphatically in the marked vein marble present in countertops, panels, porticos, baseboards, and in details of the original wooden floor.

The idea of using a single color as a base for all decoration may seem risky at first, but monochromatic projects have proven otherwise. By exploring different shades, textures, and finishes within the same palette, it is possible to create elegant, contemporary spaces full of personality.

This type of composition stands out for conveying a sense of visual unity, promoting balance, fluidity, and even spaciousness. Furthermore, it allows for the precise enhancement of architectural elements, artworks, and furniture. The secret lies in the way color is manipulated — and in the infinite possibilities it offers!

Monochromatic Projects: Where to Invest?

Living rooms in a monochromatic style are a common choice for providing a neutral and elegant base. The secret is to compose with rugs, lamps, coffee tables, and upholstery in different shades of the same color, creating a subtle and interesting visual game.
Loft Tree of Life - Marcelo Salum. Cozy shades of yellow refer to the 1950s, the era in which the story of the film The Tree of Life takes place, which inspired the architect.

In the bedrooms, monochromatism has therapeutic potential. Colors like blue, green, or beige, when used in gradient, promote relaxation and create a cozy atmosphere. In kitchens or bathrooms, monochromatic projects offer modernity and a clean look. In this case, finishes and cabinets take center stage in the composition.
Elã Studio - Toca Architecture. There are many references to Ney Matogrosso in the space created in his honor. The reddish terracotta tone is affective, sensual, and at the same time represents the strong connection to nature.

Ideal Colors for a Monochromatic Décor

Monochromatic projects do not only consist of white or gray. Although neutral tones are still the most used, monochromatic designs in shades of green, terracotta, navy blue, or even lavender are gaining more space. These colors offer personality without losing sophistication, and they are easily adaptable to different styles—from minimalism to maximalism!
Ale Mellos Interior Architecture - Gazebo of Botany. Project of CASACOR São Paulo 2025.

(Roberta Gewehr/CASACOR)

Earth tones, for example, bring coziness and are directly linked to the trend of seeking a more natural and sensory decoration. Dark blues create introspective and sophisticated atmospheres, ideal for living rooms or bedrooms.

Textures and Finishes that Enrich the Project

More than the color itself, the choice of materials and surfaces is essential to ensure that the project does not appear flat. Mixing rustic fabrics with polished finishes, or matte surfaces with shiny details, enriches visual reading and adds sophistication to the space.

Additionally, incorporating natural elements, such as fibers, stones, or ceramics, also helps break monotony and create points of interest. In monochromatic compositions, these details make all the difference.

The Secret to Not Getting It Wrong

The key to success in monochromatic projects lies in the strategic use of tonal variations. Instead of repeating exactly the same shade in all elements, the ideal is to work with lighter and darker nuances of the chosen color. This ensures depth and dynamism in the project, without compromising the original proposal.
Couple's Suite - Mariane Bassegio and Nando Machado. The contrast between the urban concept and nature is established in the projects. The TV installed in the glass skin keeps the green present, while the wall on the opposite side gains the striking texture of stone, in the same tone as the concrete.

Another valuable resource is to invest in diverse materials — such as wood, linen, marble, glass, or metals — always respecting the monochromatic palette. For example: a matte velvet sofa can contrast with the shine of a varnished side table, while lightweight fabric curtains add softness to the space.
