Pinakotheke São Paulo has a new home. After 24 years in Morumbi, the institution founded in 1979 by Max Perlingeiro, in Rio de Janeiro, now occupies a new address in Higienópolis, in a 1930s mansion located on Rua Minas Gerais, at the corner with Praça Marechal Cordeiro de Farias. The move marks a new phase for the gallery, which expands its exhibition area and inaugurates the space with the exhibition "Surrealisms: art beyond reason", on view until August 15, 2026.

Set on a 700-square-meter lot, the new headquarters has 180 sqm dedicated to the exhibition area — almost twice the previous space — in addition to a large outdoor area of 370 sqm that surrounds the building. The property underwent a restoration and adaptation process conducted by the firm Luciano Dalla Marta Arquitetura, which preserved original elements of the house, such as floors and moldings, while incorporating contemporary solutions to meet the new exhibition program.

Among the interventions, one highlight is the creation of an annex pavilion in corten steel, designed as a space for gatherings, events and complementary activities. Positioned to preserve the view of the lot, the new volume establishes a contrast with the original architecture of the mansion and reinforces the dialogue between past and present that marks the new phase of the institution.

The choice of Higienópolis also brings Pinakotheke closer to an already consolidated cultural circuit in the city, in a region that gathers institutions such as Instituto Moreira Salles and several art galleries. During the period of the inaugural exhibition, the public will also be able to enjoy the outdoor area of the space, which will host a temporary coffee shop in partnership with Café Orfeu, in addition to the bookstore dedicated to the publications of Pinakotheke Editora.

Curated by Max Perlingeiro and Tadeu Chiarelli, "Surrealisms: art beyond reason" brings together approximately 100 works by 60 artists and proposes a broad panorama of the different strands of surrealism, a movement that emerged in the early 20th century. The exhibition route includes central names of European art, such as Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Giorgio de Chirico, Joan Miró and Marcel Duchamp, in addition to Latin American, Brazilian, North American and Caribbean artists, in a selection that broadens the traditional reading of the movement.

The exhibition will also feature special rooms dedicated to Maria Martins and Louise Bourgeois, screenings of videos by contemporary artists and a selection of emblematic works by names such as Picasso, Giacometti, Hans Arp and M.C. Escher. Throughout the exhibition, Pinakotheke Editora will also launch a bilingual book on the subject, with more than 300 pages and texts by invited specialists.
