MAM RJ reopens cinema and cafeteria as a symbol of a new phase
After undergoing a series of renovations for approximately eight months, the Museum of Modern Art (MAM), located in Rio de Janeiro, partially reopened in December of last year. However, the Film Archive of MAM, which was still closed, reopened on March 13. The so-called Cosme Alves Netto Auditorium has a new audio and projection system, new lighting, and electrical wiring. Inaugurated in 1951, the film archive began screening films in 1955 and has one of the most significant audiovisual archives in Latin America, with over 7,000 titles on film, about 250,000 on analog and digital videotape, and more than 400 terabytes of digital files, as well as 3.5 million documentary items.

The museum's library has also recently reopened, located next to the film archive. The space has over 31,500 books and 618 periodical titles in its collection, considered one of the most important specialized libraries in modern and contemporary art in the country.

Meanwhile, the canteen of MAM has opened its doors again to the public after being closed for five years. The place is marked by meetings between great names in the visual arts and the Cinema Novo movement that contributed to Brazilian culture in the 1960s. The new version of the space is complemented by a charming outdoor space, with tables facing the fountain.

To honor the legacy, the establishment has brought back the traditional pastries from the 60s — with fillings such as chicken, shrimp, cheese, mushrooms, and romeo and juliet. In addition, the menu offers varied options, such as eggs, tapiocas, toasts, sandwiches, salads, and pasta. The coffees also deserve a highlight, with different preparation methods: espresso, filtered, French press, Hario, and Aeropress.

Currently, the museum has two exhibitions on display: “Forms of Water”, which brings together more than forty works by 14 artists from different geographies and generations; and “A History of Brazilian Art”, which was created for the G20 Summit held at MAM and features works by artists who played a key role in the first six decades of the 20th century. Finally, the outdoor area of the museum, often occupied by spontaneous events – such as rehearsals for blocks and dance groups – is also the stage, once a month, for the Super Saturdays Petrobras. Promoted by MAM, the program includes workshops, discussions, and musical performances.
