short films are waiting for you this holiday. Below, the
CASACOR editorial team has selected
9 films for you to watch and enjoy on the couch this Carnival holiday .
Monster (2023) - Now Playing
"A coming of age style film that paints a beautiful story about friendship and touches on several issues without actually expanding on any of them. Nominated for the 2024 Oscar for Best International Film , the Japanese film has fun with the viewer, making them change their perspective and question their own preconceptions with each arc. The story is based on a mother's concern for her son, when she realizes that he has started to act unusually , and her search for explanations. Unlike anything you've ever seen , what starts as a thriller is capable of bringing tears to the eyes by the end of the narrative."
- Giovanna Jarandilha, editor.
Past Lives (2023) - Now showing
"As a good
defender of movie theaters, my recommendation is
Past Lives – which is nominated for two categories at the
2024 Oscars . It's a great film to reflect on the
decisions we make in life, the encounters, the connections that are not by chance (or maybe they are); to think about
destiny , what your choices are... Anyway, that's my recommendation. Go to the cinema and watch it!"
- Laura Ré, social media contributor. The Menu (2022) - Star Plus
"A film that gets
weirder as the minutes go by. The story revolves around a couple who go to a
gastronomic experience signed by a renowned chef on a paradise island. And, through a
not-so-subtle script, the film builds
suspense with surprising twists. The film's director,
Mark Mylod (the same one who was in
Succession , from HBO Max), brought the
absurdity present in the world of haute cuisine brilliantly as a critique. That typical film to
capture 100% of your attention in 1h46min."
- Marina Pires, website and social media reporter. Midnight in Paris (2011) - Netflix
"One of my
favorite movies ever! It's a great option for those who want to laugh on holiday. A writer in the midst of a
creative crisis goes on vacation with his fiancée in Paris and goes for a walk alone when he ends up meeting a
group of strangers who invite him for a ride (in a carriage). They take him on a trip to the past, and in fact, these "strangers" are several
renowned writers known to this day, such as Fitzgerald, author of The Great Gatsby. In addition to the script being very well done, the
setting is beautiful! Paris is portrayed in all its beauty, both when the
protagonist is in the present and in the past - the costumes are also beautiful!"
- Chrys Hadrian, contributing reporter . Lost in Translation and Her (2003)- Telecine / Her (2013)- Amazon Prime
"Can I choose two? The 2003 film directed by
Sofia Copolla follows Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) as she travels alone to Tokyo, where she accompanies her photographer (and absentee) husband on a work trip. While she finds company in Bob Harris (a veteran actor played by Bill Murray), the two talk about their lives, marriages and simply experience the
cultural shock that the Japanese capital provokes in foreigners. Sofia also
wrote the script (which won the
Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in 2004 ) and, at the time of filming the film, was married to the director - and also photographer! - Spike Jonze. Coincidentally or not, the couple
divorced around the same time. Ten years later, Jonze released one of his biggest hits, the film Her, his own take on lonely marriages that also earned him an
Oscar for Original Screenplay in 2014. Here, the plot revolves around a man who develops a personal relationship with a kind of artificial intelligence whose presence in the work is only given by its voice - which is dubbed by Scarlett Johansson herself! It is said that the actress was not aware that she was probably playing the same character seen from two different points of view of the couple when she accepted both roles."
- Nádia Kaku, contributing reporter. We Are Guardians (2023) - Netflix
"We Are Guardians, available on Netflix, is an
internationally award-winning documentary that tells stories about
indigenous people and
leaders who are true guardians of the forest and indigenous territories against illegal activities by loggers, miners and farmers. Directed by Edivan Guajajara, Chelsea Greene and Rob Grobman. The film reinforces the relationship between the
climate emergency and the
protection of forests and
indigenous peoples in the Amazon , as a way to
guarantee a future for all humanity."
- Giuliana Capello, social media contributor.
Even If Nothing Turns Out Right (2013) - Amazon Prime
"I love this movie and the soundtrack too! It's
light, fun and, at the end, makes you want to
start a band. Perfect for a holiday! A singer
(Keira Knightley) moves to New York, but soon after arriving there, her boyfriend decides to end the relationship. In the midst of a crisis, she starts
singing in bars , until she is discovered by a record producer (Mark Ruffalo), certain that she can become a star."
