Women's Day: what to do in São Paulo on the day

Museums, cultural centers and venues across the city host activities that celebrate and reflect on the leading role of women

Celebrated on March 8, International Women’s Day inspires reflections on women’s achievements and challenges in society, but also makes room for moments of celebration. In São Paulo, the date brings a special lineup of tours, exhibitions, and cultural experiences with a focus on women that invite the public to explore the city from new perspectives. Below, a selection of activities to mark the occasion.

MASP is offering, at the Vão Livre on Avenida Paulista, a free program of sports and well-being for March 8. The activities, led by women and designed for different ages and fitness levels, include yoga, running, functional training, hula hoop, aero fight, and stretching, as well as guidance on simple exercises that can be done at home with resistance bands and light weights. The initiative is carried out in partnership with Decathlon, through the Movendo Todas program, which seeks to encourage sports practice among women in welcoming and accessible projects.

The Banco do Brasil Cultural Center is preparing a free program to mark Women’s Month. On Saturday (7), at 2 p.m., there will be the workshop “Ela se Garante – Imersão em Defesa Pessoal,” presenting practical techniques and reflections on safety and bodily autonomy. On Sunday (8), singer Indiana Nomma takes the stage with the show “A Voz dos Sem Voz,” a tribute to Argentine singer Mercedes Sosa, bringing together classics of Latin American music, such as Gracias a la Vida, in a performance with live instrumental accompaniment.

Ipiranga Museum

On March 7, the Ipiranga Museum hosts the pre-premiere of the documentary “Mulheres Artistas, Subvertendo a Submissão,” directed by Tata Amaral in partnership with Vera Hamburger. The screening is part of the Cinema at the Museum program and revisits the trajectory of Brazilian women artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries who were recognized in their time but have been little remembered in art history. The film highlights pioneering figures such as Abigail de Andrade, Julieta de França, and Georgina de Albuquerque. After the session, the audience can take part in a talk with researchers and guests connected to the theme.

The Museum of Image and Sound of São Paulo (MIS) presents a special program with a series dedicated to actress and director Diane Keaton. The selection revisits different moments of her trajectory in cinema, bringing together films in which she acted and also works directed by her, such as Heaven and Meus tios heróis. The program also includes landmark titles from her career, such as Manhattan, by Woody Allen, and Reds, by Warren Beatty, highlighting the artist’s presence in North American cinema over the past decades.

São Paulo 472 years: how about taking an architectural tour through the city?

On March 7, Sesc 24 de Maio hosts the event “Encontro Pela Vida das Mulheres!”, bringing together artists, athletes, activists, and representatives of public organizations and civil society. The initiative proposes a space for dialogue and mobilization to discuss combating violence against women, in addition to promoting public awareness and sensitization about rights, protection, and support networks.

The Catavento Museum is promoting a special program dedicated to women’s leadership in science. On March 7 and 8, the “Mulheres Cientistas” workshop presents, through a shadow theater, stories of women researchers who have left their mark on different fields of knowledge. During the week, the museum welcomes astrophysicists Rita de Cássia dos Anjos and Monyke Hellen dos Santos for the roundtable “Mulheres na Astrofísica: Desvendando Enigmas do Universo,” which addresses challenges, discoveries, and women’s trajectories in the field.

The Museum of Immigration opens the temporary exhibition “Entre Mulheres,” which brings together works by 17 women artists. The show proposes a reflection on the multiple dimensions of the female experience and highlights the role of women in different spheres of society, through works that engage with themes such as identity, memory, and agency.
