Paço do Frevo (Paço do Frevo/Divulgação)
The frevo is one of the most emblematic cultural expressions of Brazil – combining music, dance, and urban history in a single symbolic territory! In Recife (PE), the Paço do Frevo museum is dedicated to deepening this cultural heritage, functioning as a permanent space for dissemination and research.

Since 2014, the facility has operated as a Reference Center for the Safeguarding of Frevo. Its role goes beyond exhibition: the Paço do Frevo keeps the rhythm active throughout the year, promoting meetings between memory, artistic practice, and cultural training.
Curated by Bia Lessa, the Paço do Frevo proposes an experience that articulates different languages to narrate the history of frevo. The exhibitions explore the rhythm as a collective expression, linked to the streets, Carnival, and the identity of Recife.

Distributed across four floors, the museum offers workshops, performances, and educational activities. The proposal is to bring the public closer to the experience of frevo, understanding it as a dynamically cultural manifestation built by the body and listening.
Frevo emerged in the late 19th century, amidst the social transformations of urban Brazil, consolidating itself in the Carnival as an expression of the popular classes. Over time, it transcended regional borders and began to influence celebrations throughout the country.

In 2012, recognition by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity reinforced its historical relevance. The dates celebrating the National Frevo Day — February 9 and September 14 — help to preserve and disseminate this cultural heritage.
The building that houses the Paço do Frevo is a fundamental part of its narrative. Registered by IPHAN, the property integrates the historical ensemble of Bairro do Recife and carries memories of previous uses, such as the former Western Telegraph Company.

The management of the space results from a partnership between the Prefeitura do Recife, the Fundação Roberto Marinho, and the Instituto de Desenvolvimento e Gestão. The model strengthens ongoing actions of preservation, research, and transmission of frevo as collective heritage.
Access to the Paço do Frevo is designed to enhance the public's contact with frevo. Costing up to R$ 10, tickets can be purchased directly at the box office and are valid for the day of the visit – as long as respecting the museum's hours of operation!
