Institution announces architecture competition to define the project of Sesc Galeria, with awards totaling R$ 450 thousand

A contest will define the project of the new Sesc in downtown São Paulo
The architectural project for the new unit of the Social Service of Commerce (Sesc), which will be located in the João Brícola Building in downtown São Paulo, in front of the Theatro Municipal, will be decided through a competition. Sesc, together with the Institute of Architects of Brazil - São Paulo Department (IAB-SP), organizes the competition which will have as the winner one who maintains the original exterior characteristics of the building, while also creating an accessible, integrative and flexible space for the so-called Sesc Gallery. Divided into two phases, in the first moment of the dispute, the projects will be displayed as preliminary studies, and the five best will win a prize of R$ 20 thousand. In the second stage, the preliminary studies will be detailed and the finalists will be ranked from first to fifth place. The winner will receive R$ 250 thousand plus the contract value of R$ 4.105.295,00. The second place will receive R$ 60 thousand and the third R$ 40 thousand. In addition to receiving honorable mentions, competitors who reach fourth and fifth places will be distinguished with the delivery of a diploma.

The institution chose to hold a competition for the construction of the Sesc Gallery to reaffirm its commitment to transparency and the quality of community spaces. The competition will also choose the project for a Sesc unit that will be built in Mogi das Cruzes, in Greater São Paulo. Until March 3, the program will accept registrations and the submission of qualification documents for free. The notice can be checked on the official page of the Sesc. Among the architects and urban planners who are part of the evaluation board are: Anna Beatriz Ayroza Galvão, Christina de Castro Mello, Luciano Margotto Soares, Pablo Emílio Robert Hereñu, and Rosaria Ono. The new unit will offer modern infrastructure that will allow for exhibitions, sociocultural events, and public interaction spaces. The proposal includes a gallery designed with cutting-edge technology, specialized lighting, supports for multimedia projections, and a versatile projects to accommodate different types of setups. In addition to visual arts, the space will be a stage for a variety of artistic expressions such as audiovisual interventions, performances, and interactive installations.
