When the couple with two small daughters bought the old duplex penthouse of 230 m² in Leblon (RJ), the idea was already to undergo a complete renovation. The mission was assigned to architects Carolina Escala and Patricia Landau from the Escala Arquitetura office and cast of CASACOR Rio.

"The clients asked for a more comfortable staircase, plenty of natural light in the spaces, an area integrated with the terrace of the penthouse to host friends, and a new pool," says Carolina. "Since both travel a lot for work, when they are in Rio they usually work from home and, therefore, requested an office within their bedroom on the upper floor, away from the children's routine," adds partner Patricia.

With the renovation, the original layout was put down to give rise to the new configuration and distribution of the rooms. On the lower floor, for example, the architects built a bathroom that did not exist.

On the upper floor, they replaced the existing structure and roof with new ones, moved the pool, and allocated the master suite with an office. The original staircase was kept in the same position and redesigned to become more ergonomic.

The overall concept of the project sought to create a clearer and clean foundation in the living areas – composed of walls, floor-to-ceiling shelves, white curtains and sofas, and sand-colored rugs – combined with some furniture and natural wood carpentry to bring warmth and black metal frames and structures to provide a touch of modernity to the project.

In the decoration, of a jovial and cozy contemporary style, all objects and works of art were already part of the clients' collection, such as the large colorful canvas by artist Maria Lynch, which steals the scene in the living area with TV.

In the furniture, on the lower floor, came from the old apartment the Tulip dining table (by Eero Saarinen), Lenzi chairs (by Zanini de Zanine), the sideboard-buffet, the two sofas, the Eames Lounge chair with ottoman (by Ray and Charles Eames), the wooden side table, and the lamp on it.

On the upper floor, only the Piazza coffee table, by Fabrício Roncca, was already part of the clients' collection. Among the signed design pieces that were acquired, the architects highlight the Olivia coffee table, by Maria Cândida Machado, the Pensil stools, by Etel Carmona, and the pair of PL61 armchairs, by Percival Lafer.

On the upper floor, a surprise: notice the ribbon window that the architects created high on the wall at the back of the room to frame the top of Morro Dois Irmãos and increase the presence of natural light. Equally creative is the carpentry rack designed by them in the same space, which was semi-embedded in the TV wall to guarantee storage space without compromising circulation.

"The landscaping of the penthouse was designed not only to enhance the feeling of well-being but also to provide more privacy for the residents and their guests," concludes Patricia Landau.
