Architect Andrea Chicharo (from the CASACOR Rio de Janeiro lineup) is responsible for the renovation project of this duplex apartment integrated into Palacete Estrela, a historic 19th-century building that underwent a careful retrofit and is located in the Campo de Ourique neighborhood, in Lisbon (Portugal).

"Campo de Ourique is a lively, family-oriented, and very authentic neighborhood. This directly influences the way of living and was essential for the project's decisions," she explains.

With 300 sqm and four en suites, the apartment combines architectural memory, contemporary solutions, and a generous garden overlooking Lisbon — a rare attribute in a central location of the city. The property was designed for a mature couple, with grown-up married children, who wanted a functional, sophisticated space to entertain friends.

With entrance on the lower floor, the layout is organized around a wide L-shaped social area, where living and dining rooms flow seamlessly together. Balconies, the outdoor area, and the back garden enhance the feeling of a house and further strengthen the relationship between interior and exterior, one of the central axes of the project. "From the beginning, we wanted to highlight this special condition of the lot. The garden is not just a backdrop, it actively takes part in the daily experience of the apartment," explains Andrea Chicharo.

The kitchen plays a leading role in the property. With no need for traditional service areas, the residents opted for a smart integration between the kitchen and the living rooms. Sliding doors allow full openness or privacy, depending on use. Completely redesigned, the projects feature custom millwork and a lacquered finish in a metallic champagne tone (inspired by bronze aluminum) that dialogues with the Lioz limestone flooring (a classic material of Portuguese architecture).

The lighting design, developed in partnership with the Donker & Guests studio, was conceived as an essential element of the architecture. Indirect lighting, combined with focal points and decorative fixtures, enhances volumes, textures and materials, creating different atmospheres throughout the day.

On the upper floor, the layout was completely altered. Two bedrooms gave way to a spacious master suite and an office. The suite opens onto the private garden through balcony-style doors, visually connecting to the urban landscape in the background.

The furniture curation favors timeless pieces, with a strong presence of Italian design, while the color palette ranges through deep greens, turquoise, pinks, terracotta and pumpkin nuances, always applied with subtlety. According to Andrea, the choice dialogues with the building's pinkish façade, especially in the outdoor areas and balconies. "Nothing here was chosen by chance. The project is the result of many layers: original architecture, contemporary design and the residents' history," she concludes.
