Located in the iconic Arpoador neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, this apartment of 170 sq m was reborn after a full renovation led by architects Roberta Moura and Paula Faria, from the CASACOR Rio de Janeiro lineup. The property belongs to a couple — jeweler Renata Bonjean, partner at the Mabity & Bonjean atelier, and a financial market professional — who, with their 20-year-old daughter studying abroad, wanted to transform the former address into a fully utilized, integrated and fluid home.

Acquired in a rather deteriorated state, the apartment required a deep reconfiguration. Longtime friends of the professionals, the owners entrusted the office with the mission of updating the floor plan without erasing the identity and charm of the original construction. The intervention removed old partitions to open up the social area, promoting a natural connection between the living room, the kitchen and the circulation, in addition to enabling the creation of comfortable suites in the intimate wing.

Precious original elements were preserved and restored, such as the wrought-iron entrance door, the marble floor near the window and the classic peroba-do-campo wood parquet in herringbone pattern. To reinforce the sense of continuity, the same wooden parquet was extended into the integrated kitchen. Light and privacy control in the living room is provided by sliding louvered panels with white lacquer finish.

The decor is a chapter of its own, mixing the family's sentimental collection with major icons of contemporary and modern Brazilian design. Among the new acquisitions, highlights include the Tião chairs by Sergio Rodrigues, the iconic Dinamarquesa armchair by Jorge Zalszupin, the Rosá coffee table by Maria Cândida Machado, and the Nômade bar cart, designed by Claudia Moreira Salles. Designed by the office itself, an imposing American oak shelf with 33 niches embraces the dining area, functioning as a sideboard and organizer for books and memories.

The point of greatest chromatic and architectural boldness is the entrance hallway: painted from floor to ceiling in a vibrant bic-blue, the space is no longer a simple passageway but has become an expressive gallery, visible from different angles of the social area. In contrast, the powder room takes on a dramatic and enveloping atmosphere, with walls and ceiling covered in patterned wallpaper.

"The biggest challenge was creating a space with a lot of personality while taking advantage of the original features of the old property, which we consider beautiful. This ended up making the project unique", celebrates architect Roberta Moura.
