Colors, affection, and accessibility mark an apartment designed for the elderly

When the resident's daughter sought the office of Hersen Mendes Arquitetura, part of the cast of CASACOR Brasília, to renovate her elderly mother's apartment, the desire was to create a welcoming space - a true grandmother's house - that would serve as an extension of the daughter's and grandchildren's home, housing memories and stories built over a lifetime. With a defined budget that included both civil work and carpentry, the architects developed a 95 m² functional and affectionate project, designed to meet the resident's needs and enable a quick construction that was in line with the available resources.

As the daughter lives in the apartment upstairs, the renovation transformed the property into a natural extension of family coexistence without giving up the identity of the resident, who enjoys frequently hosting her children and grandchildren. Named the Relic Apartment, the project translates the resident's journey into every detail: collections of cups, memories, and small objects accumulated over the years become the protagonists of the decoration - true relics that preserve a well-lived time.

The spacious social area was designed to accommodate family gatherings and reflects the affection that guided the project. The kitchen, integrated with the living room, was conceived as a space for coexistence. Functionality and emotion unite in the design of the furniture and the fluidity between the projects.

One of the main differences in the project is the care with accessibility, present in all rooms to ensure comfort and safety for the resident. The contrast between neutral and vibrant tones, especially in the transition between the living room and kitchen, aids in visual orientation and reinforces the resident's autonomy, without giving up the aesthetics and personality of the space.

The accessibility solutions were incorporated discreetly, as in the suite, where the grab bar also functions as a support bar structured internally, allowing the resident to rise safely. Similar resources appear in other projects, such as the bathroom, always integrated into the design.

At the end of the corridor, the architects created a small office that serves as a sewing studio, one of the resident's hobbies. The space, well-lit and with a large mirror, enhances the sense of comfort and brings lightness to the routine.
