From the house to the apartment: renovation prioritizes the family's furniture collection

The apartment in Rio de Janeiro is new. Acquired for a stage of life in which the family decided to simplify: trading a 1,500 m² house in Gávea for the 320 m² property in Lagoa. But the collection is an old acquaintance. And not only of the residents, but also of the architect Mauricio Nóbrega (from the CASACOR Rio de Janeiro roster), who has been responsible for this and five other renovation and decoration projects carried out over 20 years for the same family.

"I have a long history with the residents and I know this furniture collection well, which I helped create. We bought almost nothing for this project. All the furniture they already owned was reused, reupholstered, and adapted for the apartment. Everything was redistributed," says the professional.

The property, although spacious and with a classic, well-thought-out layout, needed a major overhaul. And Mauricio started with a space almost always overlooked: the elevator hall. The passageway, which was already large, became even larger. An unusual solution that made it possible to create there a wine cellar and a corridor library with a large bookcase that occupies an entire wall and houses the residents' vast collection of books.

The social area kept the same layout with integrated living room, dining room, and balcony. The parquet floors and the marble were preserved. But what draws attention, beyond the family's refreshed furniture, is the collection of artworks — some of them with sentimental value, as they were inherited from an uncle. Colorful, playful pieces that help bring even more personality to this decor already so full of colors and memories.

In the service area, the work was radical. Part of it was turned into the master suite 's closet. Meanwhile, the kitchen was integrated into the breakfast room, which began to function as a pantry and, with that, the project also gained a view of the Lagoa.

The home's private wing was also significantly modified. Although Mauricio kept the four bedrooms (two suites, one bedroom, and an office), the bathrooms were renovated. The ones in the suites even gained a small garden in the shower, since the space has plenty of natural light.
