The country town atmosphere, surrounded by greenery, of Praça Pio XI in Jardim Botânico (RJ) inspired architect
Paula Neder - from the
CASACOR Rio cast - in the renovation of this
75 m² apartment. Very welcoming - with signature design pieces such as the Kilin armchair by Sérgio Rodrigues and works by Beatriz Milhazes - the functionality of the property was paramount to meet the needs of the resident's daughter: the girl has Angelman syndrome (a genetic condition that interferes with motor and cognitive development).
One of the three
existing bedrooms was transformed into a multifunctional room, capable of integrating with the rest of the apartment or functioning as a guest bedroom. The custom oak joinery, with sliding doors, guarantees flexibility in the use of the rooms, while the wider passageways facilitate circulation.
The creation of a window between the
kitchen and the dining room brought in more natural light and a feeling of integration between the rooms. The choice of flooring that imitates hydraulic tiles and colorful cabinets added an even more welcoming touch to the space.
"The highlight is the joinery that separates the rooms with a sliding door and, at the same time. The colors we used in the kitchen and the
bathrooms, bring that cheerful colorfulness to the project," explains Paula.
The main challenge was the advancement of the kitchen worktop over the building's circulation. The removal of the old
service room allowed the area to be expanded and a more fluid connection to be created with the dining room.
"Other
higher-end apartments had already made use of this, but as ours was on the first floor, it had to be done in such a way that it didn't hinder external circulation. We broke down the wall, made structural reinforcements and gained 60 cm for a worktop, which was essential for the kitchen space," says the architect.
The bathrooms were also rethought to maximize comfort. The old service bathroom and part of the old kitchen have been replaced by larger bathing areas.
