Signed by architects Rafa Gomes and Sandro Batalha, of Studio Plano (and part of the cast of CASACOR Santa Catarina), this linear apartment of 135 sqm, in Barra da Tijuca, in Rio de Janeiro, was renovated for the couple Flavia Malafaia (dentist) and Rafael Leone (engineer), their daughters Fernanda and Rafaela, and their dog Theo, a Border Collie. Longtime friends of Rafa, the residents already had a project underway with the firm for their previous property, in the same condominium, when the opportunity arose to acquire a larger unit in the desired block. The move led to the interruption of the initial plan and the start of a complete renovation of the new apartment, with the exception only of the daughters' bedrooms.

The proposal sought to translate the family's history and their desire to live in the new space through a narrative built from materiality. With a minimalist and timeless language, the project is structured around this foundation, which organizes the projects and establishes clear relationships between the spaces.

"One of the main premises was to incorporate the view of the sea and lagoon into the interior, enhancing the landscape with the use of sober materials and the creation of porticos and volumes that frame the horizon and direct the gaze outward," explains Rafa Gomes.

The social area integrates living room, dining room, and balcony, in addition to a connected office, which can be isolated by sliding panels with a metallic structure and white glass. The access is marked by an MDF portico in an ebonized wood pattern, with a wine cellar built into retractable doors, which delimits the projects and contrasts with the natural freijó slatted panel.

In the living room, the light base is composed of walls and ceilings with a handcrafted finish of white burnished cement, cotton and off-white chenille rug, and white linen curtains, creating a neutral backdrop for the island sofa, designed by the firm and upholstered in green fabric.

The project also preserves original elements, such as the strip wood flooring in the social area and the wooden parquet in the intimate area. The furniture curation prioritized Brazilian design, with pieces such as the Alice chaise with stool, by Aristeu Pires, the Bisco + Grelha coffee table set, by Basi.co Design, and the Trevo Drink armchair, by Prototype, designed by Felipe Protti.

In the kitchen, the language follows the same line, with a streamlined composition, central island and continuous circulation. The palette combines white, graphite and freijó wood, while sliding metalwork panels allow integrating or separating the service area without compromising natural light.

In the private area, the couple's suite combines wood veneer and neutral tones, maintaining continuity with the rest of the apartment, while the bathroom repeats the same finishing base.

With an approximate duration of one year and two months, between development, construction and finalization, the project's main challenge was the closeness to the clients. "The main challenge was developing the project for close friends and translating the family's dream into an architectural solution that reflected their history and way of living", concludes Sandro Batalha.
