Natural, versatile, and full of history, wicker is one of the oldest and most timeless materials used in design and decoration. Present since ancient times in baskets and handcrafted furniture, it has regained prominence in recent years as a symbol of a simpler, more sustainable lifestyle connected to nature.

With an aesthetic that combines lightness and texture, wicker easily adapts to different proposals—from rustic to contemporary—and is an excellent ally for those looking to add warmth and authenticity to projects.

More than a decorative element, wicker represents a form of artisanal production that values manual labor and the conscious use of natural resources.

wicker is a natural fiber harvested from the flexible branches of shrubs from the Salix genus, a woody plant of European origin, especially in cold and humid regions.

The material has spread to different parts of the world and is now also cultivated in tropical countries like Brazil. Its main feature is flexibility, which allows for hand weaving—a technique that gives rise to baskets, chairs, lamps, and various other objects.

In Brazil, the city of São Bento do Sul (SC) is one of the main poles of wicker production, housing a centuries-old tradition of artisans who master the art of weaving. The cultivation is sustainable, as cutting the branches does not kill the plant: after pruning, the plant regenerates and produces new branches, making the material an excellent ecological option.

Difference between natural and synthetic wicker

With the increasing demand for woven furniture, sinthetic wicker made from resin fibers or PVC has emerged. Although it is visually similar to natural wicker, it offers practical advantages such as greater moisture resistance and durability in outdoor areas.

On the other hand, natural wicker is more delicate but offers a unique texture and appearance, with variations in color and sheen that make each piece singular.

When choosing between the two, it is best to consider the location for use: natural wicker is perfect for indoor projects and covered areas, while sinthetic wicker adapts better to balconies, gardens, and spaces exposed to the sun and rain.

However, both share the same artisanal charm and can be combined in balanced and elegant decoration projects.

Incorporating wicker in decoration is a way to bring lightness and comfort to projects. The material stands out for its woven texture and neutral tone, harmonizing with different palettes—from white and beige to olive green and terracotta.

Wicker pieces work very well in styles like boho, rustic-chic, and Scandinavian but can also appear in modern projects when combined with metals, glass, or exposed concrete.

Among the most common uses are armchairs, stools, poufs, and organizing baskets, which add a natural touch to the space without overwhelming the composition. Another highlight is wicker lamps, which project a soft and diffused light, creating a cozy atmosphere ideal for living rooms, balconies, and bedrooms.

The value of artisanal work

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, wicker carries significant cultural and artisanal value. The manual weaving is a technique passed down from generation to generation, and each piece embodies the identity of the artisan who produced it. This manual process contrasts with the logic of industrial production, valuing time, patience, and local know-how.

By choosing a handmade wicker piece, consumers directly support artisan communities and promote sustainable practices. In many regions, especially in the interior of Brazil, wicker handicrafts are an essential source of income and a symbol of preserving traditions. Each woven strand tells a story—and it is this narrative that transforms the material into something much more valuable than a simple decorative item.

Care and maintenance of wicker pieces

To ensure the durability and beauty of wicker pieces, it is important to follow some basic care. Natural wicker should be cleaned regularly with a dry cloth or slightly damp, avoiding the use of harsh chemical products. In humid places, it is advisable to periodically apply a layer of varnish or protective wax to prevent the appearance of fungi.

In the case of synthetic wicker, maintenance is even simpler: just wash with water and mild soap. Regardless of the type, it is essential to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and rain, as this can cause fading or deformation of the fibers. When well cared for, wicker retains its original appearance for many years, reaffirming its status as a durable, sustainable material full of personality.
