With a wide range of colors, textures, and finishes, this material not only complements the design aesthetically, but also contributes to its thermal and structural performance. Furthermore, the application of natural stone enhances the property and can represent a conscious choice, especially when the extraction and processing process respects environmental criteria.

What is natural stone?

The natural stone refers to a set of materials originating from geological phenomena, extracted directly from mineral deposits. Each stone has exclusive characteristics, marked by the time and pressures it has been subjected to during its formation. This uniqueness enchants architects and designers seeking to bring to their projects textures and colors that only nature can offer. Normally, natural stone is polished and prepared for use, preserving its intrinsic properties and ensuring that it maintains its aesthetic and structural relevance over time.

Among the most common uses of natural stone are the coating of floors, walls, and facades, as well as countertops, stairs, pool edges, and decorative elements. The way it is cut (into slabs, strips, pebbles, mosaics) and the finishes applied (polished, brushed, flamed, honed) also influence its application and final result. The choice of the right type depends on the architectural project, the conditions of use, and the desired effect.

What are the main types?

There are several types of natural stone used in architecture, and the choice between them depends on both technical properties and aesthetic appeal. Below, we list the main ones:

Granite: One of the most popular stones, granite is mainly composed of quartz, feldspar, and mica, making it extremely resistant to abrasion, impacts, and temperature changes. It is recommended for high-traffic areas, kitchen countertops, and external facades. Available in colors ranging from gray to black, including shades of green, blue, and red.

Marble: A metamorphic stone formed from limestone, marble features characteristic veining and a sophisticated finish. It is more porous and less resistant than granite, making it suitable for internal areas such as washrooms, low-traffic floors, and decorative elements. It requires extra care with stains and moisture.

Slate: Of sedimentary origin, slate is a compact stone with colors ranging from black, green, gray, to rust. It is durable, slip-resistant, and widely used in floors, walls, and roofs. Its natural texture is valued in rustic and contemporary projects.

It was thought of transformation, in which the architect created a project with the proposal to show that every transformation can result in beauty. Here, materials such as fiber, twigs, and silk were used - all represent a certain phase, starting with the shape of the chrysalis sofa, curtains, and columns that resemble the weaving of construction. The quartz countertops refer to nature and the organic ceiling resembles wings. Nilson Felix Cocoon Room CASACOR Sergipe 2022 dining room table chair lamp garden.

Quartzite: With an appearance similar to marble but with resistance close to that of granite, quartzite is gaining ground in projects that combine beauty and durability. It can be used in countertops, floors, and facades, including in outdoor areas.

Travertine: A type of limestone with natural pores, widely used in classic and sophisticated projects. Its light hues and timeless appearance blend well with indoor projects. The resin version of travertine makes maintenance easier.

São Tomé Stone: Widely used in outdoor areas, especially in facades, walls, and backyard floors, São Tomé stone is an example of a natural stone with a more rustic aesthetic. Extracted mainly in the state of Minas Gerais, it has good thermal resistance, is slip-resistant, and comes in light beige, white, and yellowish tones. Its slightly irregular texture reinforces the sense of naturalness and warmth, ideal for country homes, verandas, and organic-themed projects.

In addition to these, there are stones like basalt, limestone, sandstone, soapstone, and many others, each with specific properties. It is important to consider factors such as water absorption, hardness, and sensitivity to chemical agents before making a choice.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Natural stone offers important benefits for architectural projects but also presents some challenges. Below, we list the main advantages and disadvantages to help in the evaluation of the ideal material:

Advantages
  • Exceptional durability
One of the greatest qualities of natural stone is its resistance to wear over time. When well specified and installed, it can last for decades or even centuries, maintaining its performance and appearance. This makes it ideal for high-traffic areas and external applications exposed to the elements.

  • Unique and noble aesthetics
Each stone is formed by unique natural patterns, such as veins, spots, and hues that do not repeat. This ensures an original and sophisticated finish, highly valued in projects that seek visual identity and refinement.

  • Versatility of use
It can be used in floors, walls, countertops, stairs, facades, and even furniture. Furthermore, the variety of finishes (polished, brushed, honed, flamed) allows adapting the stone to the desired style — from classic to contemporary.

  • Thermal performance
Some stones, like granite and quartzite, help regulate the temperature of projects, absorbing and releasing heat slowly. This contributes to thermal comfort, especially in warm climate regions.

Disadvantages
  • High cost
Natural stone usually has a higher price compared to industrialized materials, not only in purchase but also in installation, which requires specialized labor. Transport can also increase the budget due to the weight of the material.

  • Porosity and sensitivity
Some stones, like marble and travertine, are more porous and susceptible to stains, easily absorbing liquids. This requires periodic sealing and specific care to prevent damage.

  • Weight and need for reinforced structure
The weight of the stones may require structural reinforcement in slabs or walls, especially in large formats. This impacts project planning and can increase construction costs.

  • Specialized maintenance
To preserve the aesthetics and performance over time, natural stone requires regular care and, in some cases, specific cleaning and conservation techniques.

Care and maintenance

Its longevity directly depends on proper maintenance. To ensure its beauty and functionality over the years, it is essential to follow good care practices. Here are the main points:

  • Initial and periodic waterproofing
The first step after installation is applying a waterproofing product appropriate for the type of stone. This product forms a protective barrier against liquids and dirt. In more porous stones, such as marble, travertine, or sandstone, this process should be reapplied periodically — generally every 12 to 24 months, depending on the exposure and use of the material.

  • Cleaning with neutral products
Daily cleaning should be done with neutral detergent and a damp cloth. Abrasive, acidic, or alkaline products should be avoided, as they can cause stains or corrosion on the stone's surface. In case of persistent dirt, it is recommended to use specific cleaners for natural stone, always respecting the manufacturer's instructions.

  • Stain and scratch prevention
In areas like kitchens, it is important to use cutting boards and supports for hot pots, avoiding direct contact with acidic substances (such as vinegar, lemon, or wine) and high temperatures. This helps preserve the shine and integrity of the surface.

  • Grouts and polishing
Over time, it is common for grouts to wear or darken. Maintenance includes regular cleaning of the grouts and, when necessary, their replacement. In polished stones, professional repolishing may be required after years of intense use, especially in high-traffic areas.

  • Care for external areas
When applied in external areas, the stone is more exposed to the elements, pollution, and vegetation. Maintenance should include washing with water, a soft-bristle broom, and appropriate products. The application of anti-slip sealers is recommended to ensure safety, especially on pool floors or stairs.

Sustainability

The conscious use of natural stone can represent a sustainable choice in architecture, provided certain criteria are respected. As a natural and abundant material, stone does not depend on complex chemical processes in its production. Its extraction and processing consume less energy than industrial materials such as porcelain or concrete.

Furthermore, due to its long durability and possibility of reuse, natural stone presents a low environmental impact throughout its life cycle. In renovations and demolitions, it is often possible to reuse pieces or crush them for other uses, such as pavement bases or drainage.

On the other hand, attention must be paid to the source of the material. Irregular extraction can cause environmental and social degradation, affecting biomes and communities near the quarries. Therefore, it is essential to choose certified suppliers who practice responsible extraction, with measures for environmental recovery and compliance with legislation.

With planning and awareness, natural stone can be an ally not only of design but also of sustainability in architecture, contributing to more durable, efficient buildings that are in tune with the projects.
