The choice of the slab system is one of the most important decisions at the beginning of an architectural and structural project. This is because the slab directly influences the cost of the work, the execution time, the logistics of the site, and even the structural and acoustic performance of the building. Among the most common options in Brazil are the cast-in-place slab and the precast slab, two systems that, while having the same structural function, present quite different construction processes.

What is cast-in-place slab?


The cast-in-place slab is the one executed entirely on the construction site. The process involves assembling wooden or metal forms, placing the steel reinforcements according to the structural design, and finally, pouring the concrete for the slab. After the curing time of the concrete, the forms are removed.

This system allows for great freedom of shapes, dimensions, and geometries, being widely used in architectural projects that deviate from the orthogonal standard or that have differentiated spans. Moreover, since the pouring is continuous, the slab behaves as a monolithic element, favoring load distribution.

On the other hand, this method requires more execution time, a higher quantity of labor at the site, and strict control of the quality of the concrete pouring and curing.

What is precast slab?

The precast slab is composed of elements produced industrially, such as reinforced or post-tensioned concrete beams and filling elements, such as ceramic, concrete, or EPS tiles. These pieces are transported to the construction site, assembled on supports, and then receive a concrete cover to unify the set.

Being partially industrialized, this solution offers greater agility in execution and significantly reduces the use of forms at the site. The standardization of the pieces also contributes to more precise quality control.

However, the precast slab usually has limitations regarding very complex shapes and may require adjustments when the project does not follow modular measurements.

  • Higher generation of waste, especially from the use of wood

  • Requires strict control of pouring and curing time

Disadvantages:

  • Limitations for projects with complex shapes or outside the modular standard

  • Possible need for adjustments on-site, generating rework

  • Inferior acoustic performance compared to the solid slab, especially with light fillings (like EPS)

When to choose each type of slab?

The cast-in-place slab is more suitable for projects with complex geometries, differentiated spans, multi-story buildings, and when acoustic and structural performance is a priority. It is also common in larger works, where the cost of labor is diluted throughout the project.
