One of the most prominent artists of our time, Yayoi Kusama returns to Louis Vuitton after more than 10 years for a second collaboration with the French fashion giant. Her recognizable polka dots, which made her ' Infinity Rooms ' world famous, now fill hundreds of stamped products for the unmistakable design of the maison 's iconic pieces, including bags, shoes and even swimwear.
In 2006, then-Louis Vuitton creative director Marc Jacobs met Kusama at her Tokyo studio. The Japanese artist presented the designer with a Vuitton Ellipse bag, hand-painted with her signature polka dots. Six years later, Jacobs would send similar bags to the runway, launching one of the brand's most popular artistic collaborations to date. The brand, now run by Nicolas Ghesquière , has decided to repeat its success with a new collection that has already gone viral on social media. The difference this time is the artisanal appeal applied to certain items, which have received a special technique developed by Louis Vuitton's own artisans. makes the dots on the pieces appear "wet", as if they were paint marks that had just been painted by Kusama's hands .
Kusama is known for her art that relies on repetition, eternity and the illusion of endless space . The collection, which has already appeared in store windows around the world, will now also be featured in two new Louis Vuitton pop-ups in New York – one at 122 Greene Street in Soho; and a second at 70-74 Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District.
