Scenes from Japanese daily life, landscapes and traditions come to life in miniature form through the hands of Japanese artist and photographer Tatsuya Tanaka . His work, which illustrates the concept of " mitate " – in which miniature art is photographed with the theme of diorama figures and everyday objects – is on display at Japan House São Paulo until October 8, 2023, with free admission. In total, the 37 works were created from elements such as shells, foods such as noodles and sushi, makeup items, straws, clothespins, fans, among other objects from Japanese everyday life ; which will be divided into five main groups: seasons of the year and their events, scenes from traditional Japan, scenes from modern Japan, daily life and traditional practices.

In the unprecedented exhibition “ Japan in Miniatures - Tatsuya Tanaka ”, the public will be able to recognize brush bristles that become rice plantations, packaging for Japanese fermented soybeans, nattō , which refer to the architecture of an important Japanese castle, sushi lined up on conveyor belts that refer to trains and cars in transit and even green straws that can be confused with a bamboo grove from the change in perspective and scale. “In these small universes created by him, what draws attention is his almost fantastic perception , which recalls the purest childlike imagination about objects, renewing and reformulating their meanings at every moment”, explains the cultural director of Japan House São Paulo and curator of the exhibition, Natasha Barzaghi Geenen .

Tanaka also makes a point of including in the exhibition the element that led him to start producing miniatures and his photographs, broccoli , creating a small forest of the vegetable in the work that welcomes visitors to the Japan House São Paulo space.
