SP–Arte 2023: 10 highlights not to miss at the opening!

The most important art fair in Latin America, SP–Arte celebrates the booming art and design market in its 19th edition. From March 29 to April 2 , the Bienal Pavilion in Ibirapuera Park will host 167 exhibitors , including 85 national art galleries, 15 international art galleries and 45 design exhibitors – a sector that grew 30% compared to the last edition –, in addition to 14 publishers, 8 cultural institutions and independent spaces. With all this to see, it's hard to plan ahead so you don't miss the highlights of the 19th edition of the fair. But don't worry: in the gallery below, we've selected 10 highlights from SP–Arte 2023 for you to check out at the opening, which takes place tomorrow:

Galeria Teo is bringing to SP–Arte 20 pieces of furniture from the 1930s to the 1980s, designed by students of the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios, which will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2023. The curatorship, signed by Guilherme Wisnik, seeks to draw a parallel between architecture and the pieces created; some of which were commissioned by designers due to the quality of the pieces’ execution, but also due to the raw materials used in their production. With the aim of valuing modern Brazilian furniture, the exhibition is a preview of the new exhibition dedicated to the Liceu, scheduled to open on April 11, at Galeria Teo, at Rua João Moura 1298.

PLATAFORMA4 returns for its second participation in SP–Arte in 2023 with an exhibition of furniture and objects that mark the trajectory of the female design collective. PLATAFORMA4 will present launches and creations developed with major Brazilian industries and partner brands, such as Azzurra Móveis, Enele, Officina Origin, Grupo Indusparquet and Tramontina. The products result from the fusion of the thinking and repertoire of the four founding designers of the collective: Amélia Tarozzo, Camila Fix, Flávia Pagotti Silva and Rejane Carvalho Leite. Sheila Oliveira will present the records of her performance "Impulso", which discusses the relationships between the body of the city, an architectural body and our own body. In addition, a collaborative coffee table from Grupo Idusparquet + P4 will be presented with renowned architecture and design professionals such as Albert Sugal, Alice Martins, Artur Athayde, Cristina Rocha, Flávia Cardozo, Luciana Almeida, Luciana Penna, Nelson Kabarite, Olegário de Sá, Patrícia Martinez and Rogério Shinagawa.

Gomide&Co presents a selection that explores the wealth of works forged using elements from the earth, with special attention to the universe of ceramics. With the presence of Latin American artists from different generations, a group is revealed in which a diversity of poetics presents a common denominator: all the works bring with them the trace of a pulsating materiality that goes in the opposite direction of a time in which we Every day we see ourselves more separated from the sensitive and tactile dimension of the world. Among the names that trace this path that reminds us of what is original and earthly are Adriana Varejão, Anna Maria Maiolino, Celeida Tostes, Francisco Brennand, Julia Isidrez, Kimiko Suenaga, Lenora de Barros, León Ferrari, Lucio Fontana, Maria Cheung, Maria Lira Marques, Megumi Yuasa, Miguel dos Santos, Ofra Grinfeder, Shoko Suzuki and Ulisses Pereira.

SUITE Design, the design arm of SUITE Arquitetos, will be present at the show with the launch of serial collections celebrating the firm’s 15th anniversary. At SP-Arte, partners Carolina Mauro, Daniela Frugiuele and Filipe Troncon will be announcing the launch of the Transbordar collection, which features a serial edition of the Lina Poltrona, considered a design icon, designed in 2017 for Lider. The collection proposes a connection between design, fashion and art, questioning the boundaries between markets and proposing a transcendence of boundaries and dialogue between each of the disciplines.

With the aim of expanding the prominence of Brazilian original design, marked by artistic creativity and authenticity, La Lampe strengthens this connection by bringing to SP–Arte exclusive pieces signed by six renowned artists and designers who are part of the La Lampe+ exhibition. Among the names are Ana Weege, By Gabs, Felipe Morozini, Felipe Protti, Márcio Neri and the studio Nada Se Leva. In its first participation in SP–Arte, La Lampe “consolidates the work that has been developed over the last few years, based on the appreciation of original design, local cultures, craftsmanship and the artistic talent of Brazilian designers,” explains Alessandra Friedmann, managing partner of La Lampe.

To celebrate the centenary of Gregori Warchavchik's arrival in Brazil, in addition to launching the author's two special pieces, ETEL will promote the launch of the book “Gregori Warchavchik – A Chegada do moderno” by Silvia Segall published by Editora BEI at the ETEL Stand (DS13) at SP-Arte on April 1st at 4 pm (one day before what would be the 127th anniversary of his birth), with the presence of Silvia Segall herself, Carlos Warchavchik and Maria Cecilia Loschiavo.

Visual artist and textile designer Alex Rocca launches the Manto Series, which manifests itself as a continuation of the search for his ancestry, where art emerges from the perception of one's own skin and observation of the environment. The capsule series with 9 tapestries is the result of new aesthetic experiments. In his research for new textures, Alex found in the ancient loom a link with his African origins, where textiles have always had great importance and cultural meaning. For this poetic narrative, the artist chose silk to dialogue with the loom. With the support of Safira Tecidos, Alex had access to the silk collection reserved for recycling, from which fragments of fabrics, warps and threads of the noble raw material were donated. In this collaboration, waste is reinterpreted in the form of art, from a sustainable and activist perspective.

For the 19th edition of SP-Arte, Galeria Estação presents a set of works that reflect the gallery’s goal of fostering transgenerational artistic discourse among emerging contemporary artists and pioneering self-taught artists. To this end, the gallery offers an unprecedented opportunity for visitors to experience expansive local and global visions of Brazilian art, presenting landmark works by Chico da Silva, Conceição dos Bugres, Itamar Julião, Lorenzato, Madalena Santos Reinbolt, Mirian Inêz da Silva, Nino, as well as André Ricardo, Deni Lantz, and Santídio Pereira.

Artemobilia Galeria reinvigorates its high modernist conceptual density with the striking exhibition of a representative automobile of the national vehicle industry of the 1970s, the metallic pop violet Volkswagen SP2, in an electrifying dialogue with works by Geraldo de Barros, Martin Eisler, Carlo Hauner, Joaquim Tenreiro, Sérgio Rodrigues, Jean Gillon, Agostinho Batista, Maria Auxiliadora, Heitor dos Prazeres, Vicente do Rêgo Monteiro, Burle Marx and Xico da Silva. At the same time, Artemobilia promotes the launch of the book “Lina Bo Bardi Design: O Mobiliário Dos Tempos Pioneiros 1947-1958", with a talk at the gallery's stand, on Thursday, March 30, from 6 pm to 8 pm, with the author Sergio Campos. The literary work portrays the conceptual pioneering of the rich design production of modernist furniture signed by the multifaceted architect Lina Bo Bardi.

The Passado Composto Século XX Gallery continues to fulfill its mission by bringing to life and rediscovering Brazilian modern artists and designers who made their mark between the 1950s and 1970s, both artistically, with the creation of unique tapestries, and in furniture design, with the creation of iconic national pieces. At the point of convergence between art and design, the gallery highlights Jean Gillon, a multifaceted artist and designer, with the launch of a reissue of his Bertioga armchair. Another setting will feature pieces by Joaquim Tenreiro, a tapestry and two paintings by Genaro de Carvalho.
