One of the biggest mysteries of the contemporary art world has supposedly been uncovered by the Reuters news agency: the true identity of the artist Banksy! The investigation conducted by reporters Simon Gardner, James Pearson, and Blake Morrison indicates that the man behind the famous urban interventions is Robin Gunningham – a Briton about 51 years old who is said to have changed his documents in 2008, adopting the name David Jones.

Banksy built a trajectory marked by works in graffiti, stenciling, and installations on walls, bridges, and in public spaces. His art has always carried a strong symbolic charge, with themes related to criticism of power, wars, social inequality, and consumerism. For these reasons, the Briton prized anonymity — thus avoiding threats to his safety and possible legal complications.
According to Reuters, the association of Robin Gunningham with the artist came after cross-referencing documents, police records, and movement patterns. However, suspicions about Banksy’s possible identity have existed for decades.

A notable episode would be when Gunningham was arrested after carrying out visual interventions on a Marc Jacobs billboard during New York Fashion Week in 2000 — which bore a strong resemblance to Banksy’s approach. At the time, the man was reportedly released after posting bail.
Years later, the Briton supposedly carried out a formal process to change his identity to David Jones. In this way, he was able to continue his work and travel around the world without arousing suspicion.

Banksy’s legal representatives deny the information published by Reuters. “[Anonymity] protects freedom of expression by allowing creators to speak truth to power without fear of retaliation, censorship, or persecution — especially when addressing sensitive issues such as politics, religion, or social justice,” lawyer Mark Stephens said in a statement.
Anonymity has always been one of the pillars of Banksy’s work. Since the beginning of his career, the artist has adopted various tactics to avoid exposure. Among them are the use of pseudonyms, creating works in the middle of the night, and choosing public locations without prior authorization.

For specialists, the mystery is more than a strategy for protection against legal implications and political pressures. It is also a way to reinforce the conceptual impact of his works — boosting their market value in galleries and at auctions!
