The exhibition One Hundred Modern Years , which opened on Thursday, the 2nd, at the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS) in São Paulo, proposes a new reading of the transformations that took place in Brazil during the Modern Art Week of 1922. What happened in that year of 1922, in São Paulo, that is still capable of provoking constructive debates and heated controversies about art, politics, racism, identities and Brazilian history? Conceived by curator Marcello Dantas and composer and literary critic José Miguel Wisnik , the exhibition focuses on an exploratory nature through a large labyrinth, in which a multiple, indomitable, incoherent and sometimes contradictory Brazil is revealed. The idea is to invite the public to explore, in each new room, this desire to see and appropriate different aspects of Brazilian culture. The exhibition is based on the idea that the modernist movement vocalized, in a programmatic manner, with exhibitionist and provocative fanfare, issues that were at a boiling point. Unlike what is common in the circuit of large exhibitions, there is no specific path laid out for visitors: each person who enters the exhibition will construct their own exit, passing through different rooms, each leading to new galleries, until arriving at the present. “The whole story of this exhibition is about you discovering yourself within this labyrinth . No two people will experience the same exhibition,” explains curator Marcello Dantas. One Hundred Modern Years is not a visual arts exhibition, it is a show that seeks to indicate how the ideas and reflections of modernism have reverberated in Brazilian culture over the last hundred years, with an emphasis on music, cinema and theater. In this labyrinthine path, the visitor will be able to reevaluate Brazilian identity and the search for the indigenous matrix of the country's culture. (Iluminogravuras / CASACOR)
