A geometric design that appears complete when viewed from a single focal point, but which spreads across walls and surfaces as we move through the space : this is the motto of the work of Felice Varini, a Frenchman based in Switzerland who aims to characteristic of mixing scenography, painting and photographs in his works. For his first solo exhibition in Brazil, the artist created four new installations, conceived especially for the architecture of the
Artium Institute , in São Paulo.
Zig Zag De Quatorze Triangles, Doubles Cercles Concentriques, Sept Arcs De Cercles and Douze Petits Disques Dans Le Grand create geometric shapes on the facade of the mansion and in three interior rooms. When the dimensional image gains three dimensions, paint stains appear on columns, handrails and windows. The intention here is to provoke questions about the reality and fiction of architectural space, making the public an actor in their own experience.
The exhibition is curated by
Franck Marlot and will be on display until February 27. Admission is free and you must book online through the
website .
Artium Institute
The 1,700 m² mansion was built to be the residence of the first Swedish consul in São Paulo, in 1921, passed through two of the great São Paulo families of coffee barons and was property of the Empire of Japan for 67 years (from 1940 to 2007) . The residence was closed during the Second World War and, in 1970, as a testament to the history of Brazil at the time, the consul general of Japan was kidnapped when he arrived there.
Listed by Conpresp (Municipal Council for the Preservation of Historical, Cultural and Environmental Heritage of the City of São Paulo) and recognized as a historical heritage site, the property with eclectic architecture was built in the modernized Louis XVI style.
Degraded since 1980, the space was taken over by the
Artium Institute in 2019. Its president, businessman Carlos Cavalcanti, says that one of the missions was to carry out meticulous restoration work aimed at maintaining and recovering the historical heritage, revitalizing gardens marked by Japanese culture. , its façade in French style and recovering ornamental and decorative elements of the architecture of the time of its construction.
