MAM inaugurates new installation by artist Lenora de Barros

The new installation "Retromemória", by Lenora de Barros , has just been inaugurated at MAM , the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo . The work was developed especially for the Glass Room – at the invitation of Cauê Alves, the museum's chief curator. The installation establishes a direct dialogue with the work Spider, conceived by Louise Bourgeois in 1996, which was exhibited at MAM São Paulo for around 20 years in the same space. In Retromemória , the images reflected by the mirrors together with the words – written with the right and left hand simultaneously – are fragmented into syllables printed on vinyl, forming the large metal spider , which reflects the memory of the place in the face of its artistic dialogue with Louise Bourgeois. The work also consists of a sound installation that echoes the voice of the artist Lenora Barros herself, uttering the words “memory”, “spider”, “entanglement” repeatedly. As they intertwine, these words produce new sounds and meanings , like a web. dominating the space. The graphic and phonetic aspects of the word are close to the " verbivocovisual " dimension invented by the Irish poet James Joyce. The sound treatment is signed by the composer and cultural producer verbivocovisual .

For chief curator Cauê Alves, "at a time when MAM presents the second generation of modern art and geometric abstraction in its program, Lenora de Barros makes us think about the works that have already been exhibited at the museum, helping us to overcome losses and face the challenges of the present ." "The syllabic structure represents these fragments of memory and, in the case of this work, refers directly to Louise's memory of the Spider. The expression in the calligraphy, in the projection of lights and reflections, in addition to the sound dimension created, form this web throughout the exhibition space" , comments Lenora de Barros.
