The Mastaba was conceived by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude in 1979, after a visit to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. In addition to being the largest work of art in the world , it will be the duo's only permanent work. The idea has not yet been was approved by those responsible but already appears as a creative possibility.

The proposed location for the artwork is inland, about 160km south of Abu Dhabi, in the Liwa Desert.

Like all of the two artists’ projects, Mastaba will be self-funded and will not require government assistance. However, the project still requires approval from the executive branch, which means that construction cannot yet begin. Once this is granted, the construction period is expected to take approximately three years .This means that the work could be inaugurated in2027 – almost 50 years after it was designed by the duo.

As per Christo's wishes, the Mastaba will be realized by his nephew Vladimir Yavachev , who has worked with the artists for over thirty years and was most recently in charge of the project at the Arc de Triomphe.
