“The artist is present” is a new work by Gucci inspired by Marina Abramović’s 2010 work of the same name. Curated by Maurizio Cattelan, the aim of the project is to explore the practice of appropriation in contemporary culture: more Thirty international artists were brought together to show how originality can be achieved through repetition, and how originals themselves can be preserved through copies.
Marina Abramović's image is part of the work, even though the artist is not personally involved. Posters featuring her face replicating the original campaign for her show The Artist is Present appear on the Gucci ArtWalls, located on Lafayette Street in Manhattan, Milan's Largo la Foppa and Brick Lane. Photographs of Los Angeles and its landmarks, such as the Hollywood sign, also make up the project.
