In its 36th edition, CASACOR São Paulo follows the theme " Body & Home ", bringing reflections on the body and its relationship with physical space. In this sense, some projects bring a keen eye to crafts , especially through works that value Brazilian artisanal roots and that carry with them the stories, techniques and characteristics of handmade work spread across different regions of the country. In the Ku'Ya space, which can be defined as a loft-spa created by architects Stephanie Ribeiro , Gabriel Ramires and José Carrari Filho , Brazilian ancestry and contemporaneity come together in the Buffet Abrigo , a work by designer and artist Maria Fernanda Paes de Barros in partnership with indigenous artisans from the Mehinaku ethnic group, from Alto Xingu. “In our space, this work is one of the central elements, not only because of its original and atypical aesthetic, but also because it is the result of a genuine connection that repositions the artisanal knowledge of a traditional indigenous community within the contemporary market ”, reveals Stephanie.

Produced in a limited edition of just eight pieces, the work was conceived based on deep listening and the horizontal union of knowledge , with the aim of conveying a message of respect, equity and harmony. Made in Cabreúva with naturally dyed cotton threads, the piece uses solid wood cylinders that refer to a traditional Mehinaku mat-making technique, bringing value and visibility to the work of women of the ethnic group. “I think of decoration as an instrument that allows us to look within , at what is produced here and at the richness of the traditions that permeate our country. In this context, this is a work that raises important questions about the sustainability of artisanal work and the potential social impact of design ”, adds Carrari. Another space that focuses on crafts is Refúgio Conexão, created by architect Isabella Nalon , which is making her debut at CASACOR . Inspired by the concept of Slow Living, the 76m² living space proposes a more attentive look at oneself and the way one deals with one's own pace. “I believe it is essential to think of the home as an extension of ourselves . Our focus is on understanding how environments can contribute to our physical and mental health and, in this way, each space should reflect what works best for each person. Thinking about slowing down the pace, Brazilian crafts, to a certain extent, bring us the idea of respecting the time of things, of contact with the organic and challenges us to value the small imperfections that give uniqueness to the pieces”, says the architect.

Among the many handcrafted works that stand out at Refúgio Conexão is the Cerrado Colors and Hands collection of vases , a partnership between Paiol, one of Brazil's leading folk art and traditional craft stores, in partnership with São Paulo artist Ju Amora, who created paintings inspired by the biome's aesthetics. Created by Lucas Lassen, the vase collection is molded from clay by artisans from the Jequitinhonha Valley , a traditional stronghold of potters in Minas Gerais. To work on the pieces, the research involved studying the various colors and cultural references of the Cerrado , which allowed them to create a palette and designs that highlight the region's physical and environmental characteristics, proposing a linear union of different experiences and artistic characteristics. Beyond objects

In this edition, in addition to the objects, painting techniques also stand out in the dialogue between decoration and popular art. In a 30m² space, landscaper and agricultural engineer Mauro Contesini – a CASACOR veteran – celebrates the authentic art of the northeast, the simplicity and resilience of its artisans. Derlon , from Recife, recognized for his aesthetics that refer to the world of woodcuts, was one of the chosen artists to compose some works on the walls. In addition to Derlon, the space features works by ceramists Dheny Santos and Leslie Bassi Gaffuri . Ester Carro - Espaço Motirõ. Projeto da CASACOR São Paulo 2023. Na foto, armário com pintura indígena. Another project that highlights artistic painting is Motirõ, designed by architect and social urban planner Ester Carro . According to her, the 34m² space is a space for activism, raising awareness about peripheral living and the power of ancestral skills. To this end, she invited the young indigenous artist Waxamani Mehinaku , who uses his work with original graphics from his ethnic group and transfers them to furniture designed by designer Claudia Moreira Salles. “ The intervention was created with the future in mind, with care and the adaptations that contemporary living requires . It is a collective space that connects hands to build,” concludes Ester.
