The month of August has a
packed cultural program in the city of São Paulo! Several exhibitions have already landed on the capital's
cultural calendar , among them, highlights for "
Realities and Simulacra ", at MAM and the unprecedented exhibition of "
BB King: a better world somewhere ", at MIS. Below, we list
9 exhibitions that you can't miss this August in the capital of São Paulo!
1. Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe: all this is us - MASP
Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe (Sheroana, Venezuela, 1971) is a
Yanomami artist who has been producing drawings, monotypes and paintings since the 1990s. His delicate, abstract and minimal artistic language uses straight lines and organic curves, dots, circles, triangles, zigzags, arches and crosses. Thus, the
Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe exhibition is part of MASP's year of programming dedicated to
indigenous stories .
With 48 works , this exhibition is subtitled Ihi hei komi thepe kamie yamaki [All this is us], suggested by Hakihiiwe to incorporate the diversity of elements that make up his community and its surroundings. “All this is us,” for the artist, means “everything that is there in the jungle. We all live there, and it’s not just us. There are big rivers, big lakes, animals, all the insects. I’m rescuing everything that is there where I live.” 2. Realities and Simulacra - MAM

Until December 17, the
Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM) invites its visitors to
perceive reality in a different way and interact with other dimensions through the new exhibition " Realities and Simulacra ",
which presents new works in augmented reality in the Sculpture Garden and in different points of Ibirapuera Park , in São Paulo.
Curated by Marcus Bastos , artist and researcher in the convergence between audiovisual, art and new media, and Cauê Alves , chief curator of MAM, the exhibition brings together works by Coletivo Coletores , Daniel Lima , Dudu Tsuda , Eder Santos , Fernando Velazquez, Giselle Beiguelman , Katia Maciel , Lucas Bambozzi , Regina Silveira and Paola Barreto . Each artist received an invitation from the curators to create digital experiences, virtual works in augmented reality that integrate the game of multiplicities that is the exhibition. 3. Starting on
August 24th , the
public will be able to see up close the works of the young artist Hanz Ronald , just 27 years old, who seeks to relate figurative elements with abstract ones . The exhibition “ ELÔ, at Galeria Plexi ,
exhibits ten new works, including paintings and drawings, which are based on a personal and intimate look at the artist's desires and concerns. Highlighting the work The Touch of Everything and All Things (2023), in which Hanz uses masses of color and overlapping shapes, making fragmented bodies connect through expressive and abstract brushstrokes of a liquid. 4. BB King: A Better World Somewhere - MIS
Until October, several items from the life and work of
BB King will be available for public viewing in an unprecedented exhibition at
MIS dedicated to the
King of Blues . The exhibition
“
BB King: A Better World Somewhere ” borrows part of the name of the
1981 album to address themes of segregation and inclusion, providing a
sensory experience . The first exhibition entirely dedicated to the artist in Brazil, the project features
historical items from BB King's life. Highlights include images from the BB King Museum collection from
various phases of the artist's career , from a young
Riley Ben King , at age 23, with Michael Ocs' Gibson L48 guitar, to his portrait displaying the award for Best Traditional Blues Album at the
42nd Grammy Awards in 2000 .
5. Masterchef - Immersion & Senses - Shopping Vila Olímpia
Scenes from Japanese daily life, landscapes and traditions come to life in
miniature form through the hands of Japanese artist and photographer
Tatsuya Tanaka . His work, which illustrates the concept of "
mitate " – in which miniature art is photographed with the theme of diorama figures and everyday objects – is on display at
Japan House São Paulo until October 8, 2023, with free admission. In total, the
37 works were created from elements such as shells, foods such as noodles and sushi, makeup items, straws, clothespins, fans, among other
objects from Japanese everyday life ; which will be divided into five main groups: seasons of the year and their events, scenes from traditional Japan, scenes from modern Japan, daily life and traditional practices.
7. “Solastalgia” - MAC USP

The concept of
solastalgia – mental and/or existential stress caused by abrupt environmental changes, not only due to natural consequences, but also due to harmful extractivism models – guides and titles the
unprecedented exhibition that the filmmaker, visual artist and researcher in new media,
Lucas Bambozzi , is showing until October 1st at
MAC - Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo . The exhibition, curated by
Fernanda Pitta , features
four video installations that serve as a kind of invitation for the public to reflect on the social and environmental impact of mining activities in Brazil.
8. Iole de Freitas — IMS

The exhibition, which runs until
September 24, brings together photos and films from the time when artist
Iole de Freitas lived in Milan, London and New York. Little known to the Brazilian public, the works also address themes such as
movement and the
passage of time . By bringing together Iole's production from
the 1970s , the exhibition highlights the power of these works by the artist which, seen in the light of contemporary debates, continue to raise new questions and perspectives. When visiting the exhibition, the public will be able to learn about a
central period in the artist's career, in which she began to explore themes such as
movement and
transparency , which would come to mark all of her subsequent work.
9. "Marta Minujín: Live" - Pinacoteca
“Marta Minujín: Ao vivo” - Pinacoteca SP (Levi Fanan, Sofia Ungar/CASACOR)
The exhibition “
Marta Minujín: Live ” is the first panoramic exhibition in Brazil of one of the most important Latin American artists of her generation. On display at the
Pinacoteca de São Paulo , the exhibition brings together more than 100 works by the Argentine
Marta Minujín , who moves between different languages, scales, artistic and social circles.
