The
Galeria da Cidade hosts the exhibition "
Artacho Jurado no Desenho da Cidade " between September 4th and January 31st, 2022, which offers an insight into the life and work of the self-taught architect who built
architectural landmarks in the city of São Paulo. , such as the Bretagne, Cinderella and Louvre buildings. This Saturday (04), the opening date of the exhibition, also marks the 114th anniversary of the architect's birth.

Curated by
Teca Eça , Jurado's great-niece, the exhibition was conceived based on a documentary about the honoree. Directed by
Pedro Gorski and Teca Eça, the film is directly related to the exhibition, since scenes from the collection will be filmed from the showcases and graphic pieces on display in the gallery. Testimonies from the architect's daughter, Diva Artacho Jurado, contemporary art curator Jéssica Varrichio and journalist Raul Juste Lores, together with the original files provided by Diva – photos, drawings and plans from the collection – help us understand
how and why this architect has become so present in the city's imagination . There are three narratives that run parallel, dialoguing and complementing each other: “intimate universe: the life and passions of Artacho”, “scenographic architecture” and “Artacho’s relationship with São Paulo: how he was inspired by and inspires the city”.
Averse to the rigid codes of modernism current at the time, Jurado developed his own style , with exquisite details and lots of colors, as well as a generosity of spaces and programs, almost always opening the ground floor of his buildings to the city. Thanks to its extroverted language, it was compared by critic Décio Pignatari to the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. In this sense, the exhibition allows us to discuss the institutional values that design an impersonal city to the detriment of an affective urban experience .
