The
Panamericana School of Art and Design will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2023 and, to celebrate its history, it will be holding an unprecedented exhibition of the works of its founder, Enrique Lipszyc, starting on June 20. Entitled
The Creator and His Work , the exhibition brings together paintings and drawings produced between 2012 and 2020. For the exhibition, the curators shed light on a predominant thematic focus of Lipszyc's work – the myth of
Adam and Eve . From a perspective that goes beyond the walls erected by religious bias, the artist expressed the primordial character of these two characters, their behaviors that differentiated them from other animals and that permanently defined human existence.
The previously instinctive needs and demands – sexual desire, hunger, thirst, protection – give way to secondary feelings, such as friendship, confrontation, jealousy, power, self-identification, among others. This construction of the denial of the perfection found in paradise and the inauguration of humanity and, consequently, its ambiguity and contradictions, is clearly perceived in the works of Lipszyc, who wove each evolutionary stage of the couple.
“Enrique has worked on this theme throughout his life in the arts and it would be impossible to exhibit all of his works, which number in the hundreds,” says
Massimo Picchi , former general director of Panamericana. When studying the entire collection, they observed that the last few years reflect an artist who is more aware of his craft and style. “From 2012 to 2020, there is a palpable awareness, a full mastery of his identity as an artist,” emphasizes Picchi. Drawing, the technique that will be most seen in the exhibition, was the one that Enrique Lipszyc worked on most throughout his life. The artist had a creative way of exploring new materials in different ways. In painting, elements such as earth, glue, wax, and recycled canvas were used in his work. “It is possible to see these materials that speak to the proposed theme; for a lighter scene, Enrique used calmer tones and more subtle lines. In scenes of conflict, more vibrant tones and more striking textures are observed”, explains Alex.
In all of his works, Enrique dedicated time to categorizing and cataloging the entire creative process. “He wrote down, on the back of each work, everything that was used – paper, canvas, paints, among other materials, techniques used and date, making his excellent work as a teacher for more than five decades worthwhile,” says Alex. In this context, the exhibition also presents the intimacy of Enrique Lipszyc’s daily life, with a room that reproduces his studio, with the tools, original furniture and other elements that made up his work environment.
