How will Brazil celebrate the 100th anniversary of Modern Art Week?

The centenary of Modern Art Week takes place on February 13th, but Brazil is already prepared to celebrate. Check out some ideas for things to do!

Celebrations for the centenary of Modern Art Week have already begun in major Brazilian cities! The event, which took place in 1922, played an important role in the way we understand, make and consume art today. The city of São Paulo, for example, is planning to a vast program lasting one hundred days to celebrate the centenary of the event. Other capitals also have ambitious plans: Agenda Tarsila , a platform dedicated to the modernist movement, has selected seven events in São Paulo, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais General. The São Paulo Library will present works that address themes and subjects related to the 100th anniversary of the Modern Art Week of 22. Visitors will be able to check out the highlighted titles from the physical collection, either for appreciation or for loan. The exhibition “The Amazon of José Cláudio da Silva: on board the Garbe, with Paulo Vanzolini” brings together 100 oil paintings on canvas by the artist from Pernambuco José Claudio da Silva, created during a scientific expedition in 1975, led by Paulo Emílio Vanzolini, famous composer and zoologist, director of the Museum of Zoology at the University of São Paulo. The collection will be available until March 31, free of charge, at Palácio dos Bandeirantes , and offers unique reflections that contribute to raising awareness of environmental responsibilities . Curated by Tereza de Arruda, the exhibition “Post-Modern Brazilianness” sheds light on the achievements and milestones that the 1922 Week brought to Brazilian visual arts and brings together previously unseen works and emblematic works by 51 artists . The exhibition draws attention to the diverse characteristics of contemporary art, whose existence is partly due to the legacy of the bold artistic and cultural approach proposed by modernism. The public will be able to see these nuances in the works of artists from different generations that make up the body of the exhibition. , including Adriana Varejao, Anna Bella Geiger, Arnaldo Antunes, Cildo Meireles, Daniel Lie, Ernesto Neto, Ge Viana, Jaider Esbell, Rosana Paulino and Tunga. Buffoni's legacy is present in the artistic panels of buildings – designed by Italian architects who settled here in the same period –, such as the galleries in the city center . The artist's production can be considered a precursor of the interventions that are increasingly occupy our streets . The exhibition, which will be curated by Patricia Freitas, will be on display until February 24th, also free of charge.

The Palácio da Liberdade , in Belo Horizonte, presents the exhibition “Recortes Modernos” by the artist Alfredo Ceschiatti . The exhibition features works that span the period from 1942 to 1969. There are 13 sculptures by Ceschiatti, who is one of the most notable names in modernism. Brazilian and worldwide . The exhibition will be open to the public free of charge until March 13. Born in Belo Horizonte, Ceschiatti took his talent to Italy and was awarded for his works and partnerships with Oscar Niemeyer .

At the Imperial Palace, the public can view “The Modernist Affirmation – The Landscape and the Popular Carioca in the Banerj Collection”. From the institution’s collection, consisting of 880 works of art including paintings, drawings, engravings and sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries, formed from from the 1960s by BEG (Banco do Estado da Guanabara), 127 works were selected for the exhibition . Among them are panels by Di Cavalcanti, Marcier, Cícero Dias, Carybé and many works by leading artists in Brazilian art, such as Guignard, Pancetti, Portinari, Anita Malfatti and Djanira. The exhibition, in addition to being included in the city's anniversary celebration calendar, will also be included in the bicentennial celebration calendar of Brazil's independence , as it will present several works of art in the context of Brazil's history. The exhibition will be available until March 20, free of charge.

The multilingual exhibition “Arte Conquista”, at the Memorial Governador Régis Pacheco , in Salvador , aims to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1922 Modern Art Week. A century later, 20 artists from the most varied arts – visual arts, photography, music , theater, literature and dance – and with influences that refer to this great movement , have the initiative of a collective exhibition to celebrate the anniversary of the festival held at the Municipal de São Paulo. The exhibition is now available and will be on display until February 28th, free of charge.
