Searching for
manual activities has become more than a
hobby for many people – it has become a
lifestyle that helps connect with nature and the different senses of the body.
Graduated in agricultural engineering and doing her PhD in Australia,
Ayeska Hubner (
@ah.bordadoamao ) realized that she was not satisfied with her professional life, and that she wanted to work in something "with purpose". "I tried to find a craft activity to pass the time and, by chance, I saw a page about embroidery on Instagram. That same day, I bought some basic materials to get started and, without any pretensions, the
first time I passed the needle through the fabric in the hoop, I was enchanted by the possibility of creating, modifying and, who knows, giving new meaning to my life through colors and threads", says Ayeska.
From hobby to opportunity
Up until that point, the engineer had considered
embroidery as a hobby , but soon her first order came: a gift for a friend's newborn son. From that moment on, she had the idea that there was an
opportunity for a new direction in her career .
It was late 2019 when Ayeska decided to improve her techniques. She said she looked for foreign books to learn more styles and came across realistic embroidery (which she decided to specialize in).
One of the shortcomings that the professional found was the lack of online classes, and from that she decided to create her own embroidery course in the midst of the pandemic. "The demand increased a lot with the advance of the pandemic and that's when I developed
my first online embroidery course , in which I teach the
needle painting technique to beginners or to those who already embroider and want to learn something new." This year, the embroiderer began producing her first needle painting book, written in Portuguese and scheduled for release in early 2024.
Art in the palm of your hand
According to the expert, one of the biggest advantages of embroidery is that it is an accessible and cost-effective manual activity to get started. "With a
needle, colored thread, a piece of fabric and scissors, you can create incredible art," she says.
Playing around with different shapes, looking for a course (online or in person) and even reading books about the process to get started can help awaken a
more creative and inspiring side that embroidery can provide . As a bonus, you can also create different items to decorate your home or even give as a gift to someone you love.
What makes embroidery eye-catching is that it brings a
delicate atmosphere to the environment . These are trends that accompany the
search for more artisanal pieces and an increasingly strong connection with nature and lighter elements.
