Alfredo Volpi gets exhibition at the New National Museum of Monaco

The Nouveau Musée National de Monaco will host, from February 9 to May 20, a solo retrospective exhibition dedicated to the work of Brazilian painter Alfredo Volpi, La Poétique de la couleur (The Poetics of Color). Curated by Cristiano Raimondi and supported by the Alfredo Volpi Institute of Modern Art and the Almeida and Dale Gallery, the exhibition will feature 70 works by Volpi, including his early figurative paintings from the 1940s to his later geometric compositions.

Alfredo Volpi was born in 1896 in Lucca, Italy, but moved to Brazil as a child, settling with his family in São Paulo. As a young man, he worked as a carpenter and woodcarver before turning to painting. Initially working as a decorative painter for São Paulo's high society, it was only in the 1930s that his work began to stand out.

During the 1940s, Volpi came into contact with the works of great European masters who were arriving in Brazil. The works of Giorgio Morandi, Henry Matisse and Paul Cezanne influenced the painter in the refinement of his technique and advancement in abstraction. In the 1950s , after a trip to his homeland - Italy - and contact with pre-Renaissance frescoes and paintings, Volpi receives the award for best painting at the São Paulo Biennial, establishing himself as a great name in Brazilian art.
