Affective Affinities set the tone for the 33rd São Paulo International Biennial

For the new edition of the São Paulo Biennial, chief curator Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro brings an anti-thematic proposal. The idea is that the title of the exhibition Affective Affinities – based on two seminal works “Elective Affinities” by Goethe and “On the Affective Nature of Form in the Work of Art” by Mário Pedrosa – is merely a guiding thread and a way of organizing the exhibition as a whole, rather than a theme that drives the production. The artistic and cultural affinities between those involved define the two major blocks of the exhibition. On one side, there will be twelve individual projects selected by the curator. On the other, seven collective exhibitions conceived by seven artist-curators, who were invited to design collective exhibitions with complete freedom in choosing the artists and selecting the works – the only restriction being that they include works of their own authorship. Alejandro Cesarco, Antonio Ballester Moreno, Claudia Fontes, Mamma Andersson, Sofia Borges, Waltercio Caldas and Wura-Natasha Ogunji are the artist-curators invited by the event. In the individual exhibitions, the artists are: Alejandro Corujeira (Argentina), Aníbal López (Guatemala), Bruno Moreschi (Brazil), Denise Milan (Brazil), Feliciano Centurión (Paraguay), Lucia Nogueira (Brazil), Luiza Crosman (Brazil), Maria Laet (Brazil), Nelson Felix (Brazil), Siron Franco (Brazil), Tamar Guimarães (Brazil) and Vânia Mignone (Brazil).
