The Dolby Theatre was inaugurated in 2001, initially under the name Kodak Theatre. From the outset, the venue was planned to become the permanent home of the Oscars ceremony, organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

In 2012, after an agreement with the audio technology company Dolby Laboratories, the theater was renamed Dolby Theatre. The change reinforced the venue’s association with advanced sound systems and further cemented it as one of the main stages for cinema-related events.

The Dolby Theatre is located within the Hollywood &Highland Center complex, a large entertainment center situated on the famous Hollywood Boulevard. This area is one of the most visited by tourists in the city.

A few steps from the theater is the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame, where stars bearing the names of artists and entertainment professionals are embedded in the sidewalks. During Oscars season, the entire area around the theater receives special structures to accommodate the red carpet, guests, and press crews.

Architecture designed for major events

The Dolby Theatre’s main auditorium was designed by architect David Rockwell and has about 3,400 seats distributed across different levels, ensuring good visibility of the stage for guests. The space was conceived to accommodate large-scale television productions and high-profile events.

Columns of the walkway known as the Awards Walk, in the complex that houses the Dolby Theatre, display the names of the winners of Best Picture at the Academy Awards since 1928.

One of the site’s most striking elements is the grand monumental staircase that leads into the theater. Along it are inscribed the names of all the films that have won the Oscar for Best Picture since 1928, creating a kind of timeline of cinema history. Some spaces remain blank to receive the names of upcoming films that win the award, with room reserved for new inscriptions through the year 2071.
